10 Things Celebrity Chefs Won't Tell You - a great read
I just enjoyed reading a humorous and informative article in Smart Money by Jason Kephart titled, you guessed it, 10 Things Celebrity Chefs Won’t Tell You.
We seem to go through adoration phases in this country. I remember when we were in the comedian phase, don’t you? All the sitcoms starring stand-up comics: Jerry Seinfeld, Tim Allen and eventually Ray Romano.
By 1993 the TV Food Network came on the scene and that seemed to be the real genesis of the celebrity chef. Chefs Mario Batali, Emeril Lagasse and my fave, Sara Moulton ,were breaking ground, informing in a tried-and-true format established by Julia Child on Public Broadcasting - the real pioneer in television food education.
I miss the original TV Food Network line up; especially Sara Moulton’s BRAVE 'cooking live' programs at 7 pm and 10 p.m. – that was the TV Food Network at its best.
All recipes are not created equal
Nick Malgieri, a leading baking authority and cookbook author, received a panic call from a food stylist who was baking an ill-written recipe from one of the TV Food Network’s chefs and it just wasn’t working out. Nick explained the proportions were incorrect but the originating chef refused to acknowledge the recipe was flawed. If you cook, you realize that not every recipe works and I shouldn’t just target the TV food personalities, there are many people who should not be writing recipes.
Whose watching the TV Food Network?
The demographics have changed for the TV Food Network; what I heard from a previous star on the show the demographics are now males from 17 to 35 years of age, which explains the greater amount of cleavage we see on younger female stars.
Here are the 10 topics from 10 Things Celebrity Chefs Wont' Tell You to wet your appetite:
1. “I am a celebrity first and a chef second."
2. “There is absolutely no reason to buy my book.”
3. “Just because I have a cooking show doesn’t mean I’m a chef.”
4. “Sex sells, even with foodies.”
5. “I’m addict to porn – food porn, that is.”
6. “The dishes I make on TV don’t always work so great at home.”
7. “…and sometimes they are just plain gross.”
8. “It might be my restaurant, but that doesn’t I cook there.”
9. “ My show is one long commercial for my cookbooks.”
10. “Bottom line: My celebrity status is great for business.”
