That’s why it’s a good idea to take on a few simple projects that can be completed in just a few days, such as over the weekend. Recommend projects are those that will yield quick results for immediate gratification. Here are some of our favorite simple weekend home improvement projects.

Conserve water – Install a flush converter to the toilets, swap out old shower heads for low-flow models and add faucet aerators to all you sink faucets. You don’t have to know a thing about plumbing to do any of these simple home improvement projects, but any one of them will help save money.

Update the kitchen backsplash – Add a pop of color to the kitchen with a freshly painted backsplash behind the stove. Whether it’s chair rail or crown molding, you’ll notice immediate results when you add it to the living room, bedroom, hall or kitchen. Chair rail not only looks great but it also helps protect the wall from damage.

Replace window treatments – Change the window treatments in just one room and you’ll be amazed at the difference it will make. In the summer, change out heavy drapery for something light and airy that will let light in, and flow in the breeze. When cold weather returns, return the heavy drapes to keep the room warm.

Swap light bulbs- If you haven’t already switched to energy efficient light bulbs, it’s time to do it! It will only take about an hour to swap out all the bulbs in the house, and you’ll be surprised at how much money it will save over the course of a year. The light is also more flattering, and not nearly as hot, as what you receive from a traditional light bulb.

Weed walkways and pathways – Do you have weeds growing up through cracks in the driveway or walkways of your home? Take a few hours each day of the weekend and get them out of there! Pull them out and discard them and them spray the area with a weed killer to keep them from returning.

Trim hedges – A nicely manicured yard can really boost curb appeal. Trim hedges back so that windows are visible from the street. This not only creates a finished look, but it helps protect your home from burglars.

Clean the gutters – Clogged gutters can lead to water overflow, which can lead to foundation issues down the road. Spend a few hours cleaning the gutters by removing leaves, pine needles and other debris. While you’re at it, add gutter guards to keep debris out and reduce maintenance time next year.

Kids can get involved with some of the weekend work, too! There are plenty of home improvement projects they can help with. Get them involved with checking smoke detector batteries, reorganizing closets, decluttering kitchen cupboards and cabinets, cleaning trashcans and recycle bins, and picking up branches and stick from the yard.
