Monsanto and Big Agriculture are killing our land and our environment with their practices. They rely on toxic chemicals and genetically engineered crops to drive their profit margins up, destroying the planet in the process. We only have one earth and we need to take care of it.
Here are 10 reasons why we should boycott Monsanto, Big Agriculture, and all genetically modified foods, and demand that our food be labeled so we know what we are eating.
#1 – Massive amounts of chemicals are generated, causing Greenhouse Gas Pollution (consisting of CO2, Methane, and Nitrous Oxide). They promote false solutions for growing our food such as Industrial Biofuels, “Drought-resistant” crops, and Genetically Engineered trees.
#2 – The environment, including the Soil-Food Web, is being polluted and destroyed with pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and other persistent toxins, such as Dioxin, a lethal substance.
#3 – Wetlands and Aquifers are being drained, polluted, and inevitably are turning our once abundant and fertile farmland into desert.
#4 – Our water supply is being poisoned, as wells, lakes, rivers, and our Municipal Drinking Water supplies are inundated with chemicals.
#5 – Rainforests are being chopped down to support Monoculture farms, which grow a single, genetically engineered crop on a large piece of land. These rainforests are also being cut down to aid in the production of biofuels, and for cattle grazing.
#6 – The cost of food is rising, due to the necessity of using larger amounts of chemicals and having to continually modify the genetics of our food because nature keeps finding a way to foil humanity’s efforts, while the level of nutrition in our food is lowered and the biodiversity of our environment is eliminated.
#7 – Pesticide-resistant Superbugs and Superweeds have begun to run rampant in fields, while bacteria in animals are becoming resistant to antibiotics. Monsanto is having to develop even stronger chemicals, and spray in even larger quantities, in order to kill off these extra-resistant pests.
#8 – New plant, animal, and human diseases are being generated.
#9 – Forests, Aquifers, and Farmland are being destroyed with wasteful fossil fuel-intensive practices such as Natural Gas Fracking and Tar Sands Extraction.
#10 – Monsanto and Big Agriculture steal money from the 99% and give huge subsidies to the 1% of the wealthiest, most chemical and energy-intensive farms and food producers.
These companies (and the people who run them) are living selfishly to say the least! They are producing crops with absolutely no regard for the earth that supports it. They want profits to be sky high and more and they will stop at nothing to take over our food supply. We cannot let this happen! We need to demand that our food be farmed and produced with wholesome, clean practices.
We are sacrificing not only nutrition content in the production of genetically modified foods, but taste as well. Remember fresh tomatoes from the garden in summer? There is no better taste than that. Or what about green beans? Or squash? As humans, we have been given the responsibility of being stewards of the earth. We are here to take care of her and make sure that she will be able to support us for millennia to come. We need to stop focusing on profits and speedy production of food and get back to a simpler way of life. Support local farms such as the New Road Natural Farm, the Farmer’s Market, and stores such as Down to Earth and Garden Patch. What you buy really does have an impact on the food available to us. Please consider spending a little more to buy organic food for yourself. You will be better off in the long run! The more people who buy organic food, the lower the price will become. One person at a time adds up to a whole nation. Do what you can to support good agriculture and the earth will reward us with bountiful harvests and healthy living!
