Michaela MacColl, author of "Promise the Night", "Prisoners in the Palace", and "Nobody's Secret" (available in the spring) answers 10 questions about her favorite time period in history, her favorite figures from history, and the age old question of coffee or tea.
1. If you could go back in time and be any figure from history, who would it be?
Eleanor d’Aquitaine – she inherited the Acquitaine – the richest part of France, married the King of France and then left him to marry the King of England. Her children included Richard the Lionhearted. She was a patron of the arts and even went on crusades.
2. What year in history would you have liked to live in?
1485 in Renaissance Italy. I think that is a time when people knew that anything was possible.
3. You're having a dinner party and you can invite 5 people from history, who would they be?
I wouldn’t mind having a bunch of the Queens of England. Elizabeth I, of course, but also Anne Boleyn, Victoria, Eleanor, and the Empress Matilda who reigned as Queen for just a few months in 1141.
4. What castle from the past or present would you like to live in?
The Chateau Chambord in the Loire Valley. It combines French Renaissance architecture with elements of medieval styles too.
5. Two fellow historical fiction authors you'd like to go on a history themed tour of the world with?
Jennifer Donnelly and Laurie King.
6. Who was more dashing and interesting, King Henry VIII of England or King Louis XIV of France?
That’s a tough one! Both are interesting, but I like all the legal and religious issues that came up under King Henri VIII.
7. Which of the six wives of King Henry VIII is your favorite?
Definitely Anne Boleyn. She played the game to win.
8. English monarchy or French monarchy?
English.
9. What three novels could you read over and over?
These days I spend most of time reading young adult literature. I’m a huge fan of Jennifer Donnelly’s work, "Revolution". Recently I read "Code Name Verity" by Elizabeth Wein and any historical fiction by Laurie Halse Anderson.
10. Tea or coffee when writing?
Coffee. I’m an addict!
