In an exclusive interview on Dec. 5 with Long Island MMA Examiner Eric Holden, hard-hitting Washington knockout artist Stevie "The Ninja" VanAssche said that she's excited for her future in the sport of MMA, despite a recent setback against Elizabeth Phillips.
VanAssche, a flyweight who fights out of Wenatchee, Washington, doesn't have any bouts lined up for the months ahead, but she's already back training in case something pops up.
She kindly took a few minutes from her busy schedule to answer some questions about her budding MMA career. Here's what she had to say:
VanAssche: Well first I don't think I'd be the first exactly I've seen a few others I think in my experience, but it has been a cool experience to be a part of the show and learning the ins and out of the sport while sitting cage side for what seems like hundreds of fights. I think it helped me develop and I began to really understand the sport just by watching.
Q. Speaking of ring girls, do you think WMMA fights should have ring boys since MMA has ring girls?
VanAssche: I've been to a couple shows where they had ring guys and it was hilarious the guys really worked the crowd and everyone loved it, but no personally I still like to see ring girls.
Q. If you could change one rule in MMA, what would it be and why?
VanAssche: Sometimes I think the point system can be messed up when someone clearly beats the other person up but wins due to points such as more takedowns or something. I'm not sure how it could be done but I think there is room for improvement.
Q. I always thought it would be a good strategy to smell really terrible during a fight because an opponent might get distracted. What do you think about that?
VanAssche: I guess it could throw someone's game plan off. Maybe if you had them in a weird predicament where they had to move because of the smell then they got caught in something. Of course us girls our sweat smells like roses so that would never happen. Hah.
Q. What would you do if an opponent passed gas on you during a fight?
VanAssche: Well if they intentionally turned to fart on me out of disrespect I'd be upset for sure and probably hulk out lose my cool a little. If it was an accident that slipped out I'd let it slide but obviously still want to beat them for the competition of it.. just without the anger.
Q. Do you ever worry about a wardrobe malfunction inside the cage? If so, how do you prevent them from happening?
VanAssche: Yes!! My very first fight I felt that the others girls finger was caught on my bra strap for a split moment I totally didn't care that we were in a fight my main goal was to get her unstuck to avoid the crowd from seeing anything if they hadn't already? She landed a couple hits in the time but at least I protected my lady parts from all the cage side phone cameras.
Q. So we've seen Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate pose nude from ESPN the Body magazine. Would you ever do such a thing?
VanAssche: Most of their important parts were covered so I wouldn't consider that nude, more so implied nudity.. which is not far off some of the bikinis I've worn in photoshoots in the past so yeah I don't see why not. I would never want to expose myself completely though.
Q. So what does it feel like to punch someone in the face?
VanAssche: If its a solid hit it feels satisfying.. I really enjoy hitting pads though I love the sound it makes when you hit the pads or bag with all your power so if it doesn't connect and have the right timing then it doesn't feel as cool as you'd think.. I'm not an evil person though I don't get joy necessarily out of hurting people.
Q. So where can fans find you on social media?
VanAssche: Well I started a Twitter page this summer and started to build it up pretty good then decided to take a little vacation from social media and ended up forgetting my password so I lost it all! I do have a Facebook page though.
Q. If Hello Kitty fought Spongebob Squarepants in a cage fight, who wins and why?
VanAssche: Spongebob! He's a sponge. He's invincible.
Q. What's your favorite type of muffin?
VanAssche: Chocolate with chocolate chips.
Q. What do you eat to maintain your physique?
VanAssche: I try to eat mostly organic. I went vegan for about five months in January then vegetarian which I recently started to eat meat again after almost a year so that kept me slimmer than I normally am not getting all that animal protein, but really I just don't stress about food. If im hungry I eat. I've never had any issues with my weight and maintained 120-130lbs since highschool. I love beans any mexican food and a smoothie called the "Green Supreme" that we make at the Natural Foods Store that I work at.. it has Kale, Cauliflower, Broccoli, spriulina, chlorella, and matcha.
