Sania Mirza was born on November 15, 1986, in Bombay, India. Sania grew up in a very athletic family, as her father is a sports journalist and she is related to former cricket stars Ghulam Ahmed from India and Asif Iqbal from Pakistan.

Sania Mirza started playing tennis when she was just five years old. After winning almost two dozen junior titles, including the 2003 Wimbledon Girls Doubles title, Sania Mirza turned professional in 2003.

In 2009, Sania Mirza teamed up with fellow countrymen Mahesh Bhupathi to win a mixed doubles Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. In 2012, Sania Mirza again teamed up with Mahesh Bhupathi to win her second Grand Slam title in mixed doubles at the French Open.

In doubles play at the four Grand Slam tournaments, Sania Mirza has also had great success but has yet to win a doubles title. She did reach the finals at the French Open in 2011, playing with Russian Elena Vesnina. Sania Mirza has reached the semifinals at each of the other three Grand Slam events in doubles.

In singles play, Sania Mirza has had mixed success at the Grand Slam events. Her best showing in singles play was the fourth round of the U.S. Open in 2005. Sania has made the third round in singles at the Australian Open twice, and reached the second round in singles at Wimbledon and the Australian Open multiple times.

In 2012, Sania Mirza announced that she was retiring from playing singles and concentrating her career on playing in doubles. So far in her tennis career, Sania Mirza has earned well over $3 million.
