A potentially dangerous virus, coronavirus, which can cause acute breathing problems and kidney failure, has been identified in a tenth person in the United Kingdom, Christian Post reported on Feb. 11. Concern has risen that coronavirus will spread like the 2003 SARS virus.
Reportedly the patient who contracted the virus is a resident of the United Kingdom who had recently traveled to the Middle East and Pakistan. The patient was taken to a Manchester hospital and remains in the intensive care unit, according to a statement released by Britain’s Health Protection Agency.
Medical professionals describe coronaviruses as part of a family of viruses that are behind a variety of ailments including the common cold, as well as SARS.
Initial evidence analyzed by scientists shows that there is no proof that coronavirus spreads between humans at this time. It is suspected that humans can catch the virus from animal carriers, such as camels as well as bats.
All previous cases of coronavirus have been linked to the Middle East, but in 2012 the World Health Organization suggested that the virus was likely to be more widespread than previously thought. The World Health Organization recommended at the time that countries should run tests for coronavirus on anyone with unexplained pneumonia.
