10 more Christmas food and gift ideas

Last week, I offered some delicious gift ideas that included organic grassfed beef from Rocky Mountain Organic Meats; fruit baskets from The Fruit Guys; and several do-it-yourself basket ideas, from coffee to grapefruit. Need more ideas? Take a look at what I came up with!

  • Local organic/sustainably-raised farm-fresh foods---Buy a membership in a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm. CSA farmers are dedicated food producers who do the farming for their shareholders. This is how it works: CSAs need money upfront to buy seed, tools, or what have you before the farming season begins. Shareholders pay their portion ahead of the growing season, and, weekly throughout the growing season, receive a share of the bounty. Visit the national directory to find a CSA near the person for whom you're buying the share. CSAs operate differently, so take note of the types of shares they offer. (Expect to pay several hundred dollars, or more. Keep in mind that this food is the real deal and well worth the cost.)
  • Chocolate-lovers---Give a gift box of Chocolove bars. The wrapper is a gift in itself. Three of the 12 assorted bars in the gift box are milk chocolate, toffee and almonds, and chilies and pepper. Scrumptious eating ahead for the chocolate devotee on your list. The chocolate is to die for!
  • Another choice for chocolate-lovers---Forty-five percent of Divine Chocolates is owned by its cocoa farmers who are all paid a fair trade price for their cocoa beans. Browse through their mouth-watering Christmas gift choices. Do salted fudge, dark chocolate after-dinner mints, or milk chocolate foiled balls tempt the chocolate-lover in you? They're there for the buying!
  • Wine-lovers---Place a bottle of organically-grown wine in a basket, add chocolate bars from Chocolove or Divine Chocolates, find an organic cheese, and a box of Field Day organic cracker rounds. If it's a basket you'd love to receive, you know it's a perfect choice!
  • Herb-lovers---Give a gift subscription to The Herb Companion magazine. A one year, six-issue subscription costs $19.95. Order online and save five bucks. Each issue is chockful of articles on herbs and how to use them in cooking, or medicinally.
  • Botanicals, spices and blends, teas, creams, sachets, and spas, oils, and much more---Fill a basket of assorted products that your giftee will be thrilled to have.
  • Book-lovers---Three books I loved and highly recommend:

  1. The Dirty Life by Kristin Kimball. An amazing true life story of a big city gal who falls in love with a country fella. Together, they start Essex Farm in upstate New York, a CSA-type farm.
  2. The Compassionate Carnivore, by Catherine Friend. The author and her significant      other raise farm animals on their Minnesota farm.
  3. Bringing It to the Table, by Wendell Berry. Mr. Berry is a legend in the area of food and farming. His prose informs and inspires.

Happy shopping!
