In an effort to save our planet for future generations, we all must make the most use possible out of the things we have and not be as quick to toss an item out after just one use or not make the best use out of the things we have. With that in mind, let’s examine some marvelous uses for makeup sponges that have nothing at all to do with keeping our noses from getting shiny. These are paraphrased from the November 4, 2013 issue of First for Women.
Hydrate plants effortlessly – When you repot, line the bottom of the planter with makeup sponges. The absorbent sponges will both soak up the excess water and hold it up until the roots draw it out, ensuring your plant never gets too much or too little.
Blister-proof new shoes – Are your new shoes just a bit loose? Cut a circular makeup sponge in half, then insert each half between your heel and the back of your shoe.
Repel insects without chemicals – Place 5 drops of peppermint oil on a makeup sponge and leave it where you’ve seen pests. Flies, fleas and ants hate the strong scent. This will last for days since the sponge won’t dry out as quickly as a cotton ball or cloth rag.
Keep furniture scratch-free from ceramic coasters – While ceramic coasters are great for protecting your furniture from water rings, their sharp edges can sometimes cause scratches. Cut a makeup sponge into 4 even pieces and hot glue them to the underside of the coaster. The sponge will provide just enough cushion to protect your furniture.
Keep your cat entertained for hours – Glue 2 flat makeup sponges together along the edges, filling the space between with catnip prior to gluing shut. The air pockets of the sponge will allow the catnip scent to escape, but the material is durable enough to hold up to kitty’s clawed attacks.
Eradicate refrigerator odors – Coat a damp makeup sponge with baking soda, then set inside the refrigerator. The porous sponge will absorb odors. When it’s no longer fresh, rinse well and reapply baking soda. Repeat, as needed.
Freshen the house naturally – For a milder scent than provided by most air fresheners, dampen a makeup sponge with your favorite perfume or essential oil and place it in your vacuum’s bag or canister. As you vacuum, the sponge will gradually release the scent through the exhaust, leaving behind the light fragrance of your choice.
Keep earrings paired – Poke the posts of each pair of your earrings through a makeup sponge and attach the backs on the other side. This will not only keep your earrings in pairs, the sponges will clean the posts and backings.
Quickly sooth puffy eyes – Soak two makeup sponges in a solution of half rubbing alcohol and half water. Cover each with plastic wrap and store in the freezer. The alcohol will keep them from freezing, thereby providing you soft, flexible ice packs. When needed, rest with your eyes closed and place the plastic-wrapped sponges on your under-eye area.
De-grime a touch screen in seconds – Eliminate smudges on your tablet, cell phone or TV by rubbing a makeup sponge against the surface of the screen. The soft material will gently wipe away oil and dirt without scratching, leaving the display area crystal clear. For extra cleaning power, add a few drops of rubbing alcohol to the sponge prior to wiping the screen. The liquid will both disinfect and impart shine.
