10-man Morelia downs San Luis

Monarcas Morelia defeated San Luis FC 2-1 at the Alfonso Lastras Ramirez stadium to close Saturday’s action of the La Liga MX. Morelia won their first game of the Clausura 2013; San Luis drops their second game in three tries and remains winless so far.

Moises Velasco opened scoring for San Luis in the 20th minute of play. Enrique Perez closed the gap with five minutes left in the first half. Argentine Rodrigo Salinas converted from the penalty spot in the 56th. Monarcas lost defender Joel Huiqui in the 30th minute for after receiving his second yellow card.

It was a rough game from the start with San Luis taking control of the scoreboard early on. Velasco received a pass in the area and fired past goalkeeper Federico Vilar. The Argentine didn’t even move as the ball sailed into his net. Velasco scored to give the home side the 1-0 lead.

Things looked bad for the visiting squad when Huiqui was sent off from the field nine minutes later. The Monarcas defender had committed two fouls on striker Santiago Trellez and the referee had booked him twice to then draw a red card.

Perez closed the gap in the 40th minute when he took control of a rebound in the area on a corner kick and hammered the ball past goalkeeper Oscar “Conejo” Perez to send the game to the break with a 1-1 draw.

The purepechas hit the pitch in the second half with the intent of taking the game, not backing down despite being a man down. In the 55th minute Ricardo Jimenez took Ecuadorian Joao Rojas down inside the penalty area. Salinas took charge of converting from the spot to give Monarcas the lead.

Morelia continued to attack despite being down a player and leading the game. Monarcas Coach Ruben Omar Romano made adjustments to his squad to defend the 2-1 lead. San Luis increased their attack, but Vilar was able keep the home squad from closing the gap. Morelia wins their first game of the season and reaches four points in league play.
