Feeling blah? Low on energy? Do you need to put a bit more pep in your step? Here are a few simple solutions that will help chase away the blahs and boost your mood.
1. Be Around Those You Enjoy
Spend time with your friends and family now. Don't wait until you have time. Make time now and you will be glad you did. We spend so much time working and running around with commitments, and don't make the time with family and friends as high of a priority as we would like to. What will you regret more on your deathbed? Not getting that newest car or not spending quality time with those whom make you happy?
2. Get Outside
Whether you realize it or not, you probably spent a good amount of time as a youngin' outdoors. And you also probably felt the benefits of fresh air and good ole' sunshine. How much of our time nowadays is spent cooped up inside? Way too much! Cut yourself a break and get outside. Whether you need to eat your lunch outside, or go for a brief walk after dinner. Doesn't matter how, just get out and you will benefit.
3. Give of Yourself
One of the best ways to get happy, is to make someone else smile. And what better way to give back than to donate your time to someone/something else that could benefit from your service. I enjoy taking my kids to retirement homes and visiting with those who don't have friends or family come see them. It is a sure mood-lifter to hear stories from another era, as well as pick up some tips from those wiser and more experienced than us.
4. Be Still
We are on the go pretty much most of our days, especially with kids and families. Take some time, even if it is just 5 minutes, and be still. I have began a meditation practice that I am working on, and while it seems very difficult some days, I always feel so centered after I give myself a few minutes to clear my mind.
5. Get Moving
Many days it seems near impossible to spend any time exercising and doing what's considered 'healthy'. I am here to assure you that even if you can't give yourself an hour to spend at the gym or in a class, you can still benefit from exercise no matter how long you are able to devote. I love to walk. I am not a runner and yet I can walk at a pace I feel my heart rate picking up. I will walk for miles and miles very happily if I had the time. I know that I have many other muscles that need some attention as well, but on days that I just don't have the time or strength, I walk. It's a definite mood booster for me, and I am also getting the benefits of fresh air to boot!
6. Sleep More
This is one many moms and dads struggle with. By the time the kids get to bed, there is usually so much to do to get caught up, and then ready for the next day. However, many times we wake up feeling exhausted and in turn more sensitive to our daily interactions which lowers our happiness. I know that I am not only more productive with more rest, but also can handle my challenges easier. My magic amount to feel rested when I wake is 8 hours. What about you?
7. Cut Your Commute
Who enjoys traffic? No one I have ever met. The time spent in the car getting to and fro work, can affect us without realizing it. Take the extra time you save from moving closer, or getting a job closer to your home, and you will be surprised at the extra amount of happiness you will discover.
8. Cut the Clutter
I am not only talking physical clutter here. Yes cutting physical clutter can make your life easier. Also be sure to take some time to give thought to whether or not there may be mental and emotional stories that you may be cluttering your life with. Are you holding on to past resentment, or still carrying a negative feeling with you from something or someone who no longer has a place in your life? Get rid of it! Take the power back from that person or feeling and you will be free of that and happier with yourself.
9. Get Grateful
This one is an amazing task. How many times do we go to bed feeling thankful for all the good in our lives? How mant times do we wake up in the morning feeling thankful for the blessings we have? Take some time and make it a point to begin your day with gratitude. Even if you have to fake it at first. Find a few things that you are feeling grateful for in your life, and begin your day with them in mind. The longer you keep it up, the easier it will become, and before you know it, you just may feel happier throughout the day.
Whether you feel like smiling or not, just do it! I promise after a few tries you will begin to feel different. It may start with you feeling silly and then laughing at yourself, but your mood will improve. And who knows - as an added perk you just may brighten someone else's day with your radiant smile.
