We end the list of Miyazaki’s top films with yet another one of his masterpieces, Spirited Away. A magical, haunting and compelling tale about a young girl, named Chihiro, who becomes trapped in a world of spirits after her parents are caught eating food that is supposed to be presented to these spirits.
With her parents under an enchantment it’s up to her and a mysterious boy named Haku, to save them. Whom can she trust when it seems as though Haku is under the service of the villainous Yabubu, ruler of this otherworld.
Spirited Away goes back to the basics, to the conventions of timeless fairy tale classics with character-based humor that makes it appealing to all age groups. This is another coming-of-age story that is frequently compared to Alice in Wonderland, where the main protagonist is separated from everything she’s familiar with and thrust into a magical alternate-world.
