One of Miyazaki’s recent films, Ponyo is a beautifully animated film with amazing visuals that show how much he’s improved from his previous projects.
The story is about a female fish living in an underwater castle. She becomes curious and begins to explore the world, eventually becoming stranded on the shore. Story sound familiar? Not quite yet but almost, Ponyo is then rescued by a boy named Sosuke and grows fond of her promising to protect her forever.
Ponyo’s father becomes worried about her and sends spirits to go find her, taking her away from Sosuke, who becomes heartbroken, they return her to Fujimoto where voices her desire to become a human girl because she fell in love with Sosuke.
With the voice talents of Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Tina Fey, Cloris Leachman, Liam Neeson and the ever-amazing Betty White I’ll let you be the judge of what other Disney movie this could relate to.
Available now on Netflix.
