So few films touch so many hearts and still manage to reach artistic stature as Kiki’s Delivery Service does. This magical coming of age adventure is about a young witch-in-training who must leave her family and home for a year to train on her own in order to become a full fledged witch. Settling into a seaside village with her companion Jiji, a black cat, she supports herself by starting a delivery service.
Miyazaki’s gentle rhythm and narrative manage to capture the human life perfectly, even with magic, and portrays everyday struggles of society with sensitivity and understanding. With the voice talents of Kristen Dunst, the late Phil Hartman, Matthew Lawrence, Janeane Garofalo and many others this animated fantasy is a life-affirming story that’s great for the entire family.
