These days, music award shows are full of bisexual performers. Here are the bi and queer moments from Sunday's American Music Awards (in chronological order):
1. Bisexual rapper Nicki Minaj opened the show: A tower of giant speakers opened to reveal Minaj on a dizzyingly high platform, dressed in a metal corset and metal thigh high boots with a couple of round metal speaker parts decorating her booty, her face framed by a poufy cloud of pink-blonde curls. As she sang the lyrics “turn me on” she pulled out a giant electrical cord and plugged it in to an outlet on her corset causing huge plumes of sparks to fly out from the tower.
Here is an excerpt from the May 2010 Details magazine interview with Minaj:
Q: As an openly bisexual rapper, do you think hip-hop is getting more gay-friendly?
A: I think the world is getting more gay-friendly, so hip-hop is too. But it's harder to imagine an openly gay male rapper being embraced. People view gay men as having no street credibility. But I think we'll see one in my lifetime.
In the interview, she also talks about her habit of signing the breasts of female fans and why she wants to kiss actress Michelle Trachtenberg.
2. Fabulous rapper/singer/actress (and out lesbian) Queen Latifah (who first played a lesbian in the film Set It Off [1996], then eventually came out in real life) wore a stunning black and white, one sleeve gown to pump up the crowd and present the award for Favorite Pop Rock Group, which went to Maroon 5.
3. As Maroon 5 took the stage to accept their award, “Moves Like Jagger” (their hit referencing bisexual rocker Mick Jagger) played in the background and it was announced they’d be performing it later with (bi chanteuse) Christina Aguilera.
4. Favorite gay American Idol rocker Adam Lambert, who created shock-waves with his outrageously bisexual debut performance on this very awards show two years ago, got his audience close-up, sitting next to live-in boyfriend Sauli Koskinen who won the Finnish version of Big Brother and now works as an entertainment journalist.
5. Nicki Minaj, who was up againt Kanye and Lil Wayne, won Best Rap/Hip Hop Artist. It took her a while to get to the mic because she was wearing heels so high she had to be held up by a muscle man as she teetered across the stage.
6. Kelly Clarkson fueled rumors about her sexuality by having newsboys run on stage shouting: “Is she gay or is she straight? Why is she still single!” just before singing "Mr. Know It All,” which features the refrain, “You don’t know a thing about me.” It’s the first time I’ve seen a star get out ahead of TMZ on creating their own bisexual rumors!
7. Lady Gaga didn’t perform, although she was nominated for three AMAs: Artist of the Year, Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist, Favorite Pop/Rock Album. But there was a very entertaining commercial featuring YouTube clips of random Lady Gaga fans singing and dancing to her music, interspersed with the Lady herself.
8. Bi chanteuse Christina Aguilera joined her "The Voice" co-star Adam Levine and Maroon Five to perform “Moves Like Jagger,” doubling it’s bisexual quotient. Aguilera has been on my radar every since her “Beautiful” video featured various LGBT people and couples. In a May 2010 Out Magazine interview (when she was still married) she said,
I don't get to kiss all the girls and the boys, but my husband knows that I get into girls. I think it's fun to be open and play. The line is real to me. My husband and I check in with each other, but I definitely love women. I think they're more attractive to the naked eye.
9. Then Levine joined Gym Class Heroes to perform “Stereo Hearts” which featured some of Jagger’s actual moves via giant on-stage video screen of him dancing during their performance.
Why would I say Mick Jagger is bisexual? In case the bio by David Bowie’s ex-wife Angela, where she claimed she came home late one night and saw Jagger and Bowie in bed naked together, looking as though they had just had sex and then fallen asleep, isn’t convincing enough for you, I give you the video “Dancing in the Street” where Bowie and Jagger are dancing and flirting together for the whole video and if that’s not enough, I give you Jagger’s sexy performance on the Grammy Awards show earlier this year where he sang to guitar player Raphael Saadiq and flirted with him on stage.
10. I missed Katy Perry’s performance because Dexter was on, but who can forget that she came to national attention when her bi-curious anthem, “I Kissed a Girl,” dominated the airwaves.
