There was a blackout in Solon last night
And they all wore black
On a night where Solon honored senior players Arianna Harper, Kristen Confroy and Alexis Gray, the rest of the players on the team wanted to send them out on a high note in their last regular season game at the school.
Solon used a hot first quarter and a vice-like defense in beating Twinsburg for the second time this season 55-37 in front of a good crowd in Solon last night.
The game featured a match-up between Twinsburg's Baleigh Reid, who was coming off a 35 point effort in her last game, and Confroy, a University of Maryland recruit and a favorite to win Ms. Basketball in the state of Ohio. A couple things became clear right after the opening tip-off:
Solon is good, Solon is deep, and Solon has a great supporting cast
Using a baskets by freshman Dee Bekelja, Alexis Gray, and a banked in three pointer by Jordan Bekelja (I heard her call glass), the Comets darted out to a quick 9-2 lead and never really looked back. Two three pointers by Confroy and another by freshman Alexis Stover allowed Solon to stretch the lead to 19-6 after the first quarter. Nine different Comet players saw action in the first quarter, and that depth would take its toll on Twinsburg later in the game.
The second quarter saw some sloppy play from both teams, as both teams struggled to score and take care of the ball. Twinsburg picked up its intensity on defense, and held Solon to just 25 percent shooting in the quarter. Problem was, Twinsburg was having a hard time just making passes, let alone scoring. Solon took a 26-14 lead into the half.
In the second half, Solon's defensive pressure finally began to affect Twinsburg. With the Bekelja sisters providing constant pressure, Solon stretched the lead at the start of the third quarter off Twinsburg turnovers. Confroy hit Gray with two great passes off high pick and rolls to give the Comets their biggest lead of the night at 43-22 early in the third quarter. Twinsburg was having trouble finding another scoring option besides Reid, as the Solon defense kept coming at them in waves, taking a 39-22 lead into the fourth quarter.
The final quarter was just a matter of playing things out, as the lead never dipped below 15. Solon was able to take their three seniors out of the game at the same time with about two minutes left, and they were greeted with a "Thank You Seniors" chant from the Comet student section. The game plan seemed to be that Reid and Confroy would each get their points and basically cancel each other out. Solon would bet that "My four players left are better than your four players left"
They were right
Confroy led Solon with 16 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. Alexis Gray finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Dee Bekelja added 11 points and 5 steals. Baleigh Reid led Twinsburg with 16 points, while Marissa Howard added 11.
Solon was good, not great. They need to be in the form they were in when they took down Wadsworth last week heading into the tournament, which starts on Saturday night when the Comets host Aurora in a first round tournament game. All in all, it was a good win, against a good team, and the seniors enjoyed a nice Senior Night.
And there were actually people that saw them do it. It's a trend we all hope continues
