We all are familiar with the old saying "one man's trash is another man's treasure. One may ask, what exactly does that mean, anyway? Well, every thrift store, flea market, and pawn shop is evident that the saying is, indeed, true. Someone throws an item away because he or she no longer wants it and considers it trash. However, there is always another person who would love to stumble upon the "trash", as it could be exactly what they were looking for. Well, look no further. There is a relatively new retail boutique in downtown Los Angeles that truly embodies the aforementioned saying. The name of the store is aptly titled "1 Man's Trash" and it's located at 111 W. 7th st. on the Main st, side of the corner. The boutique made its Gallery Row debut about 7 months ago with a layout that accentuates and compliments the rarity of the clothing that it features.
The store is helmed by local designer Erik Dixon, who hand makes a majority of the pieces. The store doesn't feature modern clothes, just remade vintage and designer vintage fashion. Erik scouts items that have been discarded for whatever reason, and adds his own touch which completely transforms the piece into something new and innovative. For example, he'd take a vintage men's blazer and embroider leather patches on the elbows and leather flaps on the pockets. He also adds some signature skull patches on cashmere and acrylic sweaters for a vintage-meets-urban creation. The best part about the shopping experience is that you are guaranteed to leave out with an item that no one else has. In an era where trends become a fad, being unique is the key to fashion.
"1 Man's Trash" is also part of the renowned Downtown Art Walk which takes place every 2nd Thursday of the month. For more info visit the website for the Downtown Art Walk.
