Friday Dec. 13th another horrific shooting has occurred in Centennial Colorado at Arapahoe High School. A young men walked into the school with a shotgun asking for a particular teacher. The teacher heard this was happening and left the school immediately. Police report this is the best thing that the teacher could have done.

Heather Burke is on scene talking to students one of which was a friend of the shooter. That young man reported the shooter was demoted from the debate team and was very upset about it, the teacher who sponsors that speech and debate team is the teacher he asked for by name and was presumably after. That student also reported that the shooter was picked on a bit, but nothing major.

The gunman was found dead inside the school from what appears to be a self inflicted gunshot wound.

Two students were shot, one is in serious condition and is in surgery, the other had a minor injury and is believed to be going home tonight.

A school custodian told ABC News affiliate KMGH-TV that he saw the gunman confront the teacher, who he says was a librarian. The teacher was able to get away and the custodian said he drove the librarian away in his truck.

Police said they know the identity of the gunman, but are completing interviews with his family before releasing his name.

Arapahoe County Sheriff Greyson Robinson within 20 minutes of report of the shooting the deputies found the young man dead inside the school. Victims advocates are with the families and with the families that are inside the hospital. The school has been evacuated and will remain an active crime scene until further notice.

Arapahoe High School is part of the Littleton School District the home of the Columbine shootings April 20, 1999. It is almost one year from the anniversary of the Sandy Hook school shooting.

The police departments throughout the United States have changed the way they approach any school shootings to what is called an "active shooter protocol". The FBI describes it like this:

The term active shooter protocol entered the national lexicon in the wake of the fatal shootings at Columbine High School, a tragic capstone to similar devastation in other locales. The dynamics of Columbine redefined police response practices and spawned a constellation of in-school prevention initiatives. The educational community has placed considerable focus on having a plan in place against a dire eventuality. The industry standard protocol is geared to targeted school violence by an aggrieved student, which has been the modal category of school shootings in recent years.

The students were evacuated to the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church parents are waiting in line to be able to see their children as they are following a protocol. The parents have been in contact with their kids so they know they are fine but haven't been able take their students home yet.

A reverse 911 went out to hundreds of parents of the students at Arapahoe High School sending the Denver metro area into yet another panic.

This is an ongoing investigation and we will bring you any new information as we learn about it.
