Many school districts throughout Indiana are gearing their curriculum toward teaching students 21st century skills by giving them the ability to think critically and creatively, be technology savvy, and develop collaboration skills with other students in group projects.  It is no question that our world is becoming 'flat' and that our children’s future will depend on their ability to communicate through vehicles of technology in order to succeed in their careers.

Schools in the Indianapolis area have begun migrating 21st century skills into the classrooms by utilizing a 1:1 laptop program by giving them the opportunity to use a laptop computer during the school day, and in some cases at home.  With the laptop program, students can utilize a variety of programs such as ExploreLearning.com, TitanPad, AAAmath.com, Prezi, Roblox, as well as become adept at Microsoft applications.  These programs will be discussed in depth through the Examiner Articles in the upcoming weeks.
Students who participate in the laptop programs also have the opportunity to collaborate with students across the state, country, and even globally on common projects.  This is a fantastic way for schools to give our students 'purpose' in their daily learning.  The laptop program also encourages students to become familiar with distance learning which is being used widely among many colleges and universities, such as Ball State University. Find out whether your local school district has begun the 1:1 laptop initiative in your schools. It is a very worthwhile program that every parent should know about.
