With the season debut on Sunday of “The Living Dead” one may feel that the discovery of 1,000 buried corpses at the University of Mississippi was some oddly strange occurrence. But, it is indeed the case that workers at the University of Mississippi have come across the bodies of 1,000 corpses on the site at what had previously been the Mississippi State Lunatic Asylum, according to the Huffington Post.

The bodies were found when workers who were surveying the plot of land to help in the construction of a new parking lot for the University of Mississippi Medical Center, happened upon the plethora of bodies.

The original building opened its doors in 1855 six years before the Civil War and closed its doors several decades later in 1935. What some are speculating is that the burial site could well contain the bodies of former slaves as well as Civil War dead and tuberculosis patients, reported the Huffington Post.

The grisly find could very well put a severe damper on the expansion options the university and especially the medical center has in mind. Before any progress can go forward the relocation and burial of the 1,000 corpses will have to be dealt with. This could cost the university at least $3 million in order to bury the bodies elsewhere, according to Dr. James Keeton, dean of the medical school. He says that,"it will cost $3,000 to move each body,” according to the Huffington Post.
