The OO7 submarine car from the movie, “The Spy Who Loved Me,” went to the highest bidder at auction last month. The new owner is not only a James Bond fan, but a man with big ideas.
Musk plans to take this movie prop and make it a vehicle for exploring underwater by driving it right off the road and into the water. The 007 submarine that Musk purchased was made for the movies and it isn't a machine that's ready for underwater travel. If Musk has his way, it will be soon.
For the sake of the movie, many pieces of this car were made for shots needed for the film, along with a few other shells of the car. The 007 submarine cost Musk $920,167 and he did say “I was disappointed to learn that it can’t actually transform,” like it did for 007 when he drove it off a pier and into the water in the movie.
The submarine car is classified as a “wet submarine” which means the driver needs to wear diving gear including an oxygen tank because the car fills with water.
The passenger compartment that stayed dry for Barbara Bach’s character in “The Spy Who Loved Me,” was shot on a set made for the movie. If all goes well for the man with big ideas, it looks like the 007 submarine may be coming to a body of water near you soon!
