On June 17, 2010 Harvard Medical School released a news alert containing information gained during a study focusing on the connection between bacteria found in the gut and arthritis. A study such as this is a long way from a cure. However, it does offer some answers and may give researchers an opportunity to discover a solution to this life altering disease.
According to the study a single species of bacteria that lives in the gut is able to trigger a cascade of immune responses that can ultimately result in the development of arthritis.
The human gut is like that of most mammals, filled with thousands of species of bacteria. Many of these bacteria are helpful and aid in the development of a normal and healthy immune system. However, gut-residing bacteria also play a role in disorders of the immune system, including those autoimmune disorders known for attacking the body’s own cells.
Is it possible that this research has found a link to the cause of diseases such as RA, Lupus, and other autoimmune arthritic diseases?
The findings of this particular study will appear in the June 25 issue of the journal Immunity.
