First-ever Amnesty International art festival April 23-25 in Silver Spring, MD near DC

The first-ever Amnesty International Human Rights Art Festival will be held April 23 through 25 in the DC suburb of Silver Spring, MD.

More than 400 artists and performers will present visual, digital, and performance art, theater, film, music, workshops, and more to raise awareness of human rights and justice issues, as well as the work of Amnesty International.

The free festival will run from 4 PM to late night Friday April 23, and then from 10 AM to late night Saturday and Sunday. The opening is April 23 at 6 PM, at Ellsworth Plaza in Silver Spring. Events, several including international food, will be held throughout Silver Spring's Arts and Entertainment District.

Here's one example: Austrian artist Andreas Zingerle presents "Der Ueberflieger - Wearable Interfaces for spy pigeons" -- an experimental "mediaart" project using homing pigeons and modern technologies such as GPS and digital photography. The project demonstrates that the long-ago use of the homing pigeon as a method of communication (Reuters News Agency began using them more than 150 years ago), combined with standard modern technology, could be used -- according to Zingerle -- for monitoring surrounding areas and exposing private or public activities.

The festival was organized by Tom Block, a Maryland visual artist and playwright, who is also participating in the festival.

Amnesty International is a worldwide movement of more than two million people working for human rights.
