A special performance of Rubberball Piano & Theremin was held on January 16th with musicians Catherine Shefski on Piano and Jason Smeltzer on Theremin. The performance was held at The Music Studio on Colbrun Ave in Clarks Summit. Guests enjoyed the unique relaxing rhythm of piano and Theremin being played together as they formed a soft flowing sound to set the mood for the night. The program for the night featured the songs Standchen, Die Krahe and Die Leiermann from "Winterreise" by Franz Schubert and Charles Ives Song #12. For those of you who are wondering what the song titles mean; Winterreise translates to “The Winter Journey”, Die Krahe means “The Crow” and Die Leiermann means “The Organ Grinder”. You can find the English translation of the text here: http://www.mrichter.com/opera/files/winter.pdf. Standchen is not part of the Winterreise song group and translates simply as “Song”. At one point in the performance Catherine preformed a free improvisation using rubber bouncing balls inside the piano itself. As she rolled and bounced the balls along the piano strings Jason Smeltzer incorporated his sounds from the Moog synthesizer and the Theremin for a very interesting combination. The Music Studio’s piano students will be performing an open mic night to raise money for medical supplies for the recently devastated country of Haiti tomorrow January 30 from 6-8 PM so be sure to keep that in mind for something to do this weekend!
