Monday night a special unveiling and wine reception of a well-known Norman Rockwell painting was held at the Mark Twain Museum in Hannibal.
According to Marktwainmuseum.org, "Rockwell was commissioned by the Heritage Press to prepare illustrations for special editions of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn and traveled to Hannibal to make sketches. He donated the completed paintings to the Museum, but when he borrowed the eight scenes from Tom Sawyer for a special tour, one was mysteriously sold. Its whereabouts were unknown for many years, but in 1985 the painting was willed to the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine."
This exhibit marks the first time in nearly 70 years that all of the Rockwell paintings have been reunited.
The painting is on loan from the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine. At the unveiling details of the painting’s history were shared and attendees saw the painting before it was placed behind a protective cover for the duration of its visit to the Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum.
Rockwells Reunited will be on display through December 1. Contact the Mark Twain Museum online, or call (573) 221-7975 for more information.
