Tips on how to make your art supplies last

I received a lot of tips on how to make your art supplies last a little longer. Thank you! Here are some of my favorites from Las Vegas artists.

“It’s so dry here,” says abstract painter, Bonnie Kelso, about working in Las Vegas. Kelso likes to keep a spray bottle handy when using acrylics. Just a few squirts of water helps to keep the paint on her palette from drying out.

Vegas Artists Guild President Roberto Rico says he loves his Sta-Wet Palette. “It’s the best investment ever.” Sta-Wet Palettes have a sponge layer that keeps your paints moist. You can also use them for oils.

If you think your freezer is just for frozen foods, think again. Vegas Artists Guild Vice President Lily Adamczyk likes to freeze her leftover oil paints. She stores them on a glass palette and says they last forever. Adamczyk also suggests that if you use disposable palettes try buying the generic brand of children’s finger painting paper from Michaels then cut it in half.

When creating jewelry artist, Jessica Kennedy, says she strings differently than most. Kennedy uses minimal amounts of wire. She only winds up throwing away 1” per piece because she makes sure it is secure before she clips. “Since I’ve been doing this, I can now get nearly 4 more pieces out of one spool of memory wire than I could before. That translates into about $100 to $500 more dollars in my pocket, depending on the pieces.”
