Debra Latham is a native Texan and much of her inspiration comes from her family farm house in the Texas Hill Country. She’s always been somewhat of an artist and designer growing up. Painting was only a hobby until it became an obsession for her. She became more aware of her talent as an oil painter in her 30’s. “As a mother of two teenage boys with full academic and athletic schedules, life can get very stressful. Painting helps me unwind.” Debra says.
Debra is a self-taught artist. She studies the work of the old masters and some of the more popular artist of today. Some of her favorite artists are: John Singer Sargent, Rembrandt, David Leffel, Sherrie McGraw, Nydia Lazano, Daniel Gerhartz and Robert Coombs.
Oil is her medium of choice because she loves the richness of the colors that you can only get from oil. She mostly paints from photos she’s taken on her travels. She loves painting people most of all.
Debra is 2nd Vice President of Kingwood Art Society and a member of Plein Air Austin.
She is currently working on my Barnyard series. Her family has a ranch in the Hill country and of which she draws her muse from the beautiful scenery and animals all around.
Debra also started a weekly painting group that meet every week and just paints their hearts out. All day! They all learn from each other even though they don't always work in the same medium. She encourages anyone that is always saying "I never have time to paint" to get a group together and start a weekly painting group. She maintains a blog for Thursday Painters for anyone interested in what the Kingswood painters are currently working on.
She currently is organizing the 2009 Fall Art Show & Competition which will be November 7th at Kings Harbor on the River in Kingwood. Debra's ultimate goal is to demonstrate that if there is a will there is a way for the artist in all of us. She believes that everyone has the talent, they just need to explore their creativity and make a place in their life for art. She hopes to inspire others to explore their creative spirit.
