Samuel Schimek does it every 15 minutes.
That’s how often he says a new concept comes to him. So it only seemed natural to give that name to his ongoing projects.
“This name, 15 min., has allowed me to encompass everything I do--to treat it as design and art, either independently or together--whatever my needs are,” Schimek says.
Schimek, a pop-art designer from Denver, focuses on re-purposed art. Also called up-cycled or recycled, this contemporary trend is a direct off-shoot of the Green Movement.
Using 99% recycled materials--like house paint, animal figures, thrift store jewelry, and old frames--Schimek uses color and concept to create a flashy commentary on form, light and shadow.
Decor, jewelry, graphics, fabric, design and sculpture are all fair game for Schimek. The common thread is the contemporized object--the piece with a previous purpose made new.
“I use found objects as a resource, as a means to build my work, rather than as a genre,” Schimek says.
Heavily influenced by the commercial design world, he sees his work not only as an end product but as the process leading up to it.
Building an image, promotion, branding and art-entrepreneurship are concepts constantly pushing his direction.
Where does Schimek see himself going in 2010?
“I’m thinking--more exhibitions in Denver, more new patterns, more design work, a fabric line,” he says.
Anything else? “Oven mitts,” he laughs.
Schimek is curating the upcoming Re-Purposed Pop-Up Market and Art Exhibition, to be held January 1 at Green Spaces in Denver.
