Last Friday night I attended the opening of "Big Mess" at Golden Gallery. Featured are the works of Sonja Drummond and Andrew Holmquist, two emerging Chicago Artist. Although, the artist reference the New York School of Painting from the 50's with their gestural technique. With loose gestural brush strokes and added hot pastel colors, their work is very much in contemporary style painting of today. Reminiscent of the candy colors of contemporary New York painter; Dana Schultz , Drummond and Holmquist entice the viewer with abstract figural forms and cotton candy colors one could eat! In two paintings, imaginative places of a basketball court and water slide set a fanciful colorful place someone could imagine themselves at, weather relaxing or in childhood play. The paintings are on view until March 22nd in the heart of Boystown at 816 W. Newport and the gallery hours are Friday, Saturday, Sunday 1-6pm and by appointment. phone: 773-209-8889
