An ever present interest in comics, such as Batman and Mad Magazine, got Dan Rhett to start creating his own form of comics about 15 years ago.
His first book of comics, “In the Face of the Mummy,” a supernatural adventure story, is about a pyramid tour guide who finds himself feeling the effects of a mummy’s curse.
“It was the first time I [used] the style I do my comics in,” said Rhett, who lives in Chester.
In Rhett’s second comics book, “North Country Mallet Technique,” another supernatural adventure tale, instead of a mummy, the same main character encounters vampires.
Both books were lengthy which is why with his latest comics book, “Codex Danier,” Rhett wrote and illustrated three short comics stories for a collection piece.
Rhett graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1990 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting and printmaking.
This summer his fifth paintings show will go on exhibit at Visual Art Studio.
“There’s a story behind all of [his paintings],” said Visual Art Studio owner Anne Hart Chay, who attended VCU with Rhett.
Among his inspirations as a painter, Rhett counts German expressionists, the followers of Gogan such as Pierre Bernard, and Milton Avery. As a result, he is unsure what style best describes his paintings.
“I’m pretty sure they have trouble telling what style [Milton Avery] is,” said Rhett.
A few paintings left from previous shows, “Codex Danier,” his card games and other art by Rhett are available at Visual Art Studio.
Visual Art Studio is located at 208 West Broad Street and can be reached at 804/644-1368. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday, noon to 6 p.m. and Saturday, noon to 4 p.m.
