The Noftsger Hill Inn sits stately at the top of North Street in Globe AZ and was once known as the North Globe School House. The school was built in 1907 and several additions were built on to accommodate the growing community. The school closed in 1981 after educating generations of the mining town’s children. One of Noftsger Hill’s Schools most famous students was former Arizona governor Rose Mofford.
The building sat vacant for several years until renovations turned the landmark school into a classy bed and breakfast. Now visitors can reserve one of six classrooms and enjoy fabulous views of the old Dominion Mine or a breath taking view of the city of Globe.
There seems to be a few ghosts in the old building that decided to stay after school was over. Ghost hunters find the quiet bed and breakfast the perfect spot for capturing EVP and encountering a spirit or two. It is the perfect location to reserve all the rooms at the inn and enjoy a weekend with a group of paranormal investigators.
Megan and I booked Room 2 on the first floor and carried our bags of equipment and cameras into the room. Almost immediately things began to happen. We sat down in a couple of rocking chairs in the center of the room to plan our strategy for the night. Megan glanced over to a leather reading chair and saw an apparition of an elderly, partially bald, white haired man with long sideburns leaning over as if he was listening to our conversation. Then he faded away.
We saw a shadow of a youngster glide down the wall near the chalk boards and linger in a corner for some time. The corridor walls of the bed and breakfast are lined with classroom photographs once captured on the front steps of Noftsger School. Megan recognized the visitor in our room in one the photos to be a former school teacher or principal.
Later, I was standing near the edge of Megan’s bed when a very strange even happened right before my eyes. I glanced down to see a small black fuzzy mass about the size of a child’s fist emerge from under the bed—punch the outside of my right foot—and retract back under the bed. I quickly got down on my hands and knees to see what was under the bed, but found nothing.
The MVD Ghostchasers held a workshop at the Noftsger Inn in January 2009. We had every inch of the building covered so there was no way any paranormal activity could slip past us. We held several EVP sessions throughout the night. We were also able to debunk some of the previous reports of unexplained voices and lights in Room 1. There is an electrical power box connected to the outer wall of this particular room which projects an extremely high EMF reading near the bed and sitting area. This could cause anxiety and a feeling of being watched.
So, gather up your camera, recorders, and your bag of paranormal equipment. Ghost hunters have captured EVP’s of footsteps and the voices of children. We have photographed strange balls of lights on cam corders rolled during the night—usually about 3am. Guests have heard the faint voices of teachers instructing their classrooms. It is a nice weekend getaway and as the owners say, “Sleep in class at the Old Noftsger Hill School.” And you won’t even have to clean the chalk board erasers.
