Looking out over New York City, one sees a patchwork of asphalt and concrete.  These days, it's becoming more likely to spot patches of green thanks to Brooklyn-based Alive Structures, who specialize in creating green roofs, ecological gardens, green walls and developing educational programs on the importance of vegetation in the urban environment. 

Founded by Marni Horwitz, Alive Structures seeks to green the largest of  spaces - from industrial companies' roofs over 5,000 sq. ft., for which there is a special financial incentive - to the smallest apartment patio, with their new Alive Planters (below), made from recycled shredded paper mixed with cement which are available for purchase at The Brooklyn Flea
