Typhoon 2001 is a fun freeware game inspired by both the Atari Jaguar hit game Tempest 2000 and the arcade classic Tempest. In the game the player must rotate a claw spaceship around the playing field clearing the screen of enemies as you use your blaster to shoot them. In the process the player's main goal is to score as many points as possible.
As in the original Tempest various enemies rotate around at the far end of the playing field, then enter the playing field and move toward the player. The player has to be careful to avoid being shot, captured or struck by the spikes of the enemies. When all enemies in a level are destroyed the player then warps to the next level by traveling down the playing field.
Aside from the updated graphics and music new features of Typhoon 2001 include the ability to gain power ups such as different weapons, shields and new abilities such as jumping. Typhoon 2001 also offers different bonuses and modes for the player to select and play through.
Controls in the game utilize the PC keyboard, mouse and buttons. For a true arcade experience players can use a trackball or spinner as well. This game also makes a perfect addition to a MAME Arcade Cabinet.
Since the game is freeware it can be downloaded at no charge via http://typhoon.kuto.de/download.html. Although the creator does accept paypal donations which if you enjoy the game is a nice gesture toward the creators time and development.
