Stick to using mailboxes for a while
It may be prudent to avoid your local post office for the next few weeks or so. With the latest recession-inspired announcement from the U.S. Post, prepare to brace your bad selves for a dramatic increase in disgruntled postal worker massacres.
In a somewhat dramatic response to the failing economy, some 150, 000 USPS employees- one quarter of the total workforce- are to be offered early retirement. 3, 000 will be flat-out fired. Just think about that for a moment. Over 25% of the people responsible for the operation of America’s sprawling postal system- arguably one of the nation’s most important social services- are about to be rendered obsolete.
President Obama assures us that better times are just around the corner. It’s kinda hard to believe that when a long-established (and wholly necessary) tenet of American society is at risk of crumbling into disarray.
If I were you, I’d stock up on all your stamps and envelopes now, before things get any worse. It could be just a matter of weeks before your local post office starts to resemble downtown Sadr City.

Mr. Shev
this ia a dispicable piece of journalism. It is a atempt of humor at the expense of hard working postal employees whom have the public trust, not to mention those who have suffered heartbrake and family loss from a few disturbed people
SHAME ON YOU MR. SHEV
Mr. Shev - Disgusting thoughts. You should be ashamed of yourself.
Mr.Shev - Disgusting thoughts. You should be ashamed at yourself.
Besides bing needlessly cruel to Postal Workers, your article is rediculously inacurate. First off, who would be "disgruntled" about beng so lucky to retire early? That would b a good thing, don't you think?! Secondly, it says early retirement will be "offered" not imposed on anyone. The same deal more or less was avaiable last year and only a few thousand postal workers took the deal. Postal worker have Civil Service rights and union benefits much better than the majority of US workers. Pretty much the only individuals who have any possibility of losing their jobs are temporary and new part time workers. Even those individuals will be safe if many regulars take the government up on the early retirement deal.
This article was inaccurate, unfair and totally ignorant of the situation, You should be ashamed of yourself
You are wrong. This time they have hit management. The craft workers have been hit EVERY other time. It is about time that they got rid of them. That is where the waste is. The Postal Workers that the customers deal with are skipping down the street with a sweet whistle on their lips.
you're sick
I wonder what would Mr. Shev's response be if someone wrote a 'humorous' article about the Holocaust?
if i see any disgruntled employees in my office i'll send them your way. you piece of shyt!
Right on! People need to have a sense of humor, which is something most postal workers lack.
Mr. Shev - Perhaps Examiner.com feels you are a "credible, passionate, knowledgeable writers" but your article is mean-spirited and woefully inaccurate. There will not be 150,000 postal workers retiring. Most likely less than 10,000 will accept the Early Retirement offer. Also the 3,000 "being fired" will have opportunities to find other jobs within the postal service. Many jobs have been held back for this type of situation. There will be jobs for almost everyone.
While I appreciate your support of the USPS and the service it provides the public you lose many points for going the "digruntled postal worker" route. Please try harder next time.
almost went last and after the dead line pasti knew i had made a mistake and didnt go.this time i am out the door no matter what they offer.they let workers go but management numbers stay the same . 162,000 are able to go and wont well good for them if they have nothing better to do with there life i do. if it is just going to the beach every day . i am sick of every day how much under time do you have .u adjusted my route to rid me of under time remember.so how do i have under time ?i am 53 and have had enough .
All those people getting OTHER jobs in the PO will be landing jobs as PM in offices that have only had OIC's. This will really mess up the mail. People doing a job they have no idea about. I've had the great displeasure of working under 2 different ones. Mr Shev, it will only get worse so look out!
Do you know what a disgruntled Postal worker looks like? Your article is disgusting and totally false. It scares people to think that they may be in danger from the Postal carriers who have worked so hard to help them and get here mail to them even when the wrong address is on their mail. We are there 6 days a week. No other company employs the amount of people that the Post office does. Why don't you write about the good things that are happening instead of causing unsubstaionated fear!
The information you have printed has only touched the surface and that proves that you are a blow hard who "knows not what he speaks". Most personnel will be re-assigned to vacant positions and most, if not all, stupidvisors have and/or will be given "make work" jobs. We have seen many new (misplaced stupidvisors) people walking around our plant TODAY with pen and pad in hand and I assume they are trying to prove that the craft workers are the reason for the postal problems. The actual workers don't spend millions of dollars on stupid ideas. That is left to upper management and they are very good at wasting the money. That is why the PO is broke. You must be a newcomer in the writing business trying to make a name for himself, but you have only made yourself look and sound stupid.
The USPS announcement was PR. The early out offer has been on the table for a while now. Full time hourly employees are protected from lay-offs via labor contracts ( a concession for being unable to strike like UPS employees). The management reductions will only work if employees retire. If employees stay then USPS will have to pay relocation costs (like the $1.2 million house purchase in news recently). USPS is the nations largest full time non-military employer. It operates the nationals largest fleet. It has 10X the retail outlets as Wal-Mart (34K+). It is a tax-free org. That is no tax dollars are used for normal operations. At a time when AIG has required $170 Billion to stay afloat the USPS managed to contain losses to about $2 billion. Why the USPS refused to match postage rise to match losses seems purely political. The loss is certainly within scope of the current financial crisis. Congress has already notified USPS that delivery will remain on 6 days a week schedule. How much the USPS will be able to change will end up relying on new administration. A self sufficient federal agency that uses no federal dollars will not be a main priority but shedding jobs during harshest economy since WWII will not go over very well with Washington. More than likely Postmaster Potter will be replaced soon and the Obama administration may bring an outside team to manage for short term. Same for Board of Governors and Postal Rate Commission. Standard stuff to replace top staff when new president comes in.
To all the haters in this talkback- go to hell. I have my soapbox and I'll use it however I see fit. Oh, and for anyone who thinks I'm really all that serious, please take a look at some of my other articles. The purpose of this blog is entertainment, first and foremost. I'm not going to apologize for making a 'disgruntled postal worker' joke. I mean, come on, that bit's as old as it gets. By the way, my source for this article was CNN, so if my facts are wrong, I ain't the only one...
But thanks for visiting my little corner of the web, anyhow. Come back often, and leave plenty of comments- every time you visit, I'm getting paid. Like me or love me, one thing's for sure- I want your money.
Get your facts straight. Yes, they will be "offered" an early out, but most likely will not take it. Also, the USPS has not been filling any vacant positions for the last 6 monthe, so the affected employees will most likely find a position elsewhere in the postal service. The glass is half full, my friend!
Men who write tripe like Wyatt Shev usually suffer from 'little penis syndrome'!
The mantra "go slow for more dough" I believe is the reason why the po is in the red and going south. of course, it is not the employee's fault, it is the mantra's fault.
Like everyone else has said there will definately not be 150,000 people retire from the postal service this year and the 1,900 managers they are planning to cut across the nation will have a job to go to. They will not just be placed into jobs that they have no idea how to do. They will receive training. As far as the reporting that the postal service was 2 billion in the red last year. Yes this was the case. But, if you factor in the 5 billion we put in a trust account for future retiree benefits that puts us up by 3 billion. 3 billion in the black.... pretty impressive based on the current economic conditions.
I thought you were funnier than crap.
My brother has been a letter-carrier for 30+ years. This early-out comes up every so often, just like the '5 day work week' comes up every 5 or so years, but it's put down and it's back to 6 days a week.
Like a previous comment said, it's just PR.
And I do find most of your articles humorous. I just think this one hit a 'beyond the humor' nerve with some people.
I've been a postal clerk for 31 years in 2 states and 5 offices. I am now in a branch office and I could get the P.O. out of their financial hole if the main office would GIVE ME STAMPS TO SELL. "They" have lowered the amount of stamps I can have on hand and I have to turn customers away! "District" has decreed this.
It would be like McDonald's losing money, so they decide to quit selling quarter pounders!
I just resigned the usps due to circumstances BEYONDmy control....seasoned people will know what that actually means! Get out While they r not tryinto make u onto the Bad Guy! 21yrs, no respect just a offer to get out and they won't talk bad on me! Decided I Hated the USPS and I should do myself a favor and get out with that offer. However, don't think I could not have fought tooth and nail, sometimes it is just better to realize WHO u r up against and count ur blessings! I hated it anyways! An Out was an out! I was in a positions to make a statement about my continous disability stopping me frmperforming my duties, but I did'nt want to they cornered me into it! I was tired of being in that system of rehab and decided to opt for an out! It was after almost 14 yrs I just got tired of tryin to keep a JOB! Ridiculous! With every new mgr or sup I was explaining myself, getting re-injured blah blah blah! Opt fordis Retirement! Did not want to was forced into that corner!
