YESCO was founded in Ogden, Utah in 1920. Today it is a national company with Headquarters in Salt Lake City. The company proudly celebrates 90 years successful business.
Thomas Young and YESCO
Thomas Young was a son of British immigrants who came to Ogden, Utah, from Monreal, Canada in 1910 – in the year when George Cloude exhibited the first neon sign in Paris, France.
Young started his career in 1914 as a sign writer. In 1920 Young borrowed from his father $300 and founded the Thomas Young Sign Company (March 20th). It specialized in artistic design including neon signs, wall-painted ads, gold-leaf window lettering and coffin plates. The first shop was at 2450 Washington in Ogden, Utah. They sold neon signs in Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Nevada.
In 1927 YESCO (Young Electric Sign Company) began manufacturing neon tubing. Because of continuing interests in the movies, YESCO’s theater marquee signs were in high demand in 1930s. In 1934 YESCO had 12,000 employees. In 1936 Thomas Young became elected president of the National Sign Association, which was served for two terms. In 1945 was installed Builder Club sign in Las Vegas the first spectacular sign that initiated the “golden age of neon”. YESCO opened a branch office in Las Vegas. In 1949 was built a new manufacturing plant in Salt Lake that used Plexiglas and aluminum. In 1951 was built and installed a 75' tall and 12,000 pound Vegas Vic sign in Las Vegas. In 1960s new acrylic plastic signs revolutionized the industry.
In 1969 Thomas Young was named president of YESCO, but he died in 1971. Since 1970 YESCO has been developing as a national company. In 2009 the company moved in a new building we west Salt Lake City.
If you look through the history of the company http://www.yesco.com/yesco-timeline2.html the key of its success is always following the newest technologies including energy-saving signs (automatic dimming technology). YESCO Electronics has become an integral part of the digital outdoor revolution since 2002. According to online information, YESCO is the most experienced producer of technology for this emerging market.
It is a little bit confusing that the headquarters of a company with a huge success in Las Vegas is in a state where gabling is prohibited. This fact once again shows the business cannot always match the regional policy.
The company has a storage yard for retired signs in Las Vegas, which is not open to the public. It supports extraordinary the Neon Museum in Las Vegas.
