ASET (1) is a West Valley, Salt Lake County, based company that organizes annual workshops on airbrush art. A rich collection including a whole auto can been seen in the warehouse-gallery of the company, while selected pieces of 16 artists have been exhibited in Utah Cultural Celebration Center in West valley, through May 5, 2010 (free to the public).
Eight consecutive years excellent American airbrush specialists taught students at ASET working on specific assignments – painting on snowboards, guitars, tables, miniature automobiles, etc (see the slideshow) (2). The artshow embraces 77 pieces by 16 foremost and younger airbrush artists from different states of the USA:
Dean Loucks, Steve Driscoll, Craig Fraser, Steve Vandemon, Deborah Mahan, Pamela Shanteau, Mike Lavalee, Ryno Templeton, Fonzy, Gerald Mendoz, Brian Papa, Bones, Paul Quinn, Bob Soroka, Jason Doll, Abel, and Ron Gibbs.
Michael Christensen, the co-organizer of the exhibition on the behalf of Cultural Celebration Center, shared that it is unusual artshow for the Center’s gallery, since as a rule, the space is committed to ethnic exhibits there. Sherri Candland, the guest-curator from ASET, learned about this Center time ago and is very satisfied by the fact that the project succeeded. Usually visitors see the airbrush artworks in ASET warehouse gallery, after special arrangements with company. Many students from West Valley have been learned about this branch of the American pop culture with roots in later 19th century through this exhibit.
Airbrush art is among the most exciting visual expressions of American pop culture. It combines difficult but learnable technology, artistic abilities and specific selectivity of themes and styles. Many artists in the USA have been doing airbrush art for living. Although one can draw everything, the typical airbrush subjects in West Valley show are from the fields of pop music, movies, and comics. Some of the artists who participated in the ASET artshows had orders even from Europe and attended European workshops to teach. Without doubt, the exhibit would be very successful in any gallery over the ocean.
