After an attempted run to become the endorsed candidate for the Independence Party, Tea Party activist, Barb Davis White is making a big splash in the CD5 Congressional race. According to an article published on Tuesday, June 1st, Ms. White will be running against Keith Ellison to represent the DFL in on the ballot this November.
Immediately after the Independence Party's endorsing convention, Ms. White received many messages of support and disbelief on her Facebook page. A process started, to collect the signatures needed to run as an independent. During the effort to collect signatures, Ms. White, at some point decided to change her strategy and fight Mr. Ellison on his own turf with a primary battle.
In her press release, Barb Davis White stated:
“All I had to do was listen to what my neighbors were telling me. Hundreds of signatures were obtained in the past few days – certainly enough to meet the 1,000 needed for filing as an independent candidate – but what struck me was how many registered Democrats signed the petition knowing that I am a pro-life, conservative constitutionalist. It didn’t seem to matter as long as they knew I was running against Keith (Ellison).”
Keith Ellison, as an unpopular representative in his own party, Ms. White is banking on the average Minnesota democrat’s dislike of Representative Ellison to translate into a victory in the primary. This is a turn of events that will likely lead to quite a ruckus in political circles in Minnesota.
The primary will be held on August 10th, 2010.
Update: Barb Davis White campaign releases video on why she filed as a Democrat.
