"Kimba the White Lion"
The largest film festival dedicated to children and teens in North America, New York International Children's Film Festival, will be having a special, two day screening of Osamu Tezuka anime shorts and films.
On November 28th and 29th, each at 11AM, Symphony Space will be screening Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion, tickets on sale for $11.00 per person. Astro Boy, the robot of a great scientist, battles evil in the world that seeks to harm through the mishandlings of technology. Astro Boy is Tezuka's most famous and well known character, this piece, from 1963, is recommended for all ages. Kimba, a little lion cub, must take his father's place as king after his untimely death, but in order to do so must face his evil uncle and a band of hyenas. Kimba, the inspiration behind Disney's classic, The Lion King, debuted in 1967 and is open to all ages.
Screening only on Saturday the 28th at 1PM, tickets also $11.00 per person, will be three Tezuka short films. The first, Legend of the Forest, running at twenty-nine minutes and produced in 1987, is a tale about faeries, wizards and animals defending themselves and nature against greedy industrialists. The second, Tales of the Street Corner from 1962, running thirty-nine minutes long, is the story about a girl who has lost her teddy, a moth and a mouse and posters that come to life. The third and final screening on Saturday will be of Jumping, only six minutes long, from 1984. This is a short from the point of view of a bouncing ball. It must be noted that this film contains brief images of animated breasts and racially insensitive posters, otherwise, all three shorts are suggested for children eight and up.
