Thanks to the 7,200 employees at Adventist HealthCare (AHC), dogs and cats currently housed at the Montgomery County Humane Society (MCHS) won’t be going hungry anytime soon. The health care organization, one of the largest employers in the state of Maryland, recently donated 2,449 pounds of companion animal food to the open-admission shelter located in Rockville, MD.
“We’ve been averaging about 250 animals at the shelter on any given day, so this most generous donation from Adventist HealthCare’s employees covers pet food for roughly two weeks,” states B J Altschul, Director of Community & Educational Relations for MCHS. “Adventist has done many projects for us over the past couple of years and we’re so grateful for their support. Their latest project frees us to cover other needs the animals have every day – like beds, veterinary care, and toys.”
In the 2010 fiscal year, MCHS received over 9,000 live animals, of which approximately 5,300 were dogs, cats, kittens, and puppies. Altschul explains that with these intake numbers, the shelter consistently uses approximately 840 of dry dog food, 420 pounds of dry cat food, and 42 cases of wet dog and cat food each week. Additionally, some animals are picky eaters or require specialty food due to health issues, so the Adventist donation included a range of different brands of food for the animals to enjoy.
Adventist HealthCare has consistently provided assistance to the MCHS through their quarterly animal giving campaigns. Previous support has included donation of medical supplies, Kuranda beds for the kennels, and a long-standing adoption information table inside AHC corporate headquarters.

What a great partnership!
Another great example of how reaching out and embracing the community your shelter is in, to help everyone. Donors get to feel good about what they are doing; pets get more positive attention; the shelter shows it cares; slim resources get spread further. Thank you, Adventist Health Care.
