United Action for Animals' 'Bet for Pets' casino event
to benefit New York City's animals
On Thursday, October 1, New York City’s Marquee Night Club will be rolling out the red carpet for the animals. Well, not quite for the animals, but they will be rolling it for the city's animal lovers.
United Action for Animals, a New York City-based animal advocacy group, will be hosting the event, called ‘Bets for Pets.’ Tickets are $100 per person and include four hours of drinks, music, hors d’oeuvres, gambling with free chips, silent auction and raffle prizes.
Most notable however, is that the proceeds will go to the animals. UAA will use the money raised from the event to benefit free and low cost spay/neuter clinics around New York City.
UAA will provide free MASH-style (mobile) spay/neuter surgeries to pit-bulls and pit-bull mixes, as well as $25 surgeries to other dog breeds and cats. The clinics will be in "hot spots," or areas where most stray and relinquished animals come from. The clinics will be set up on school campuses, churches and community centers in the outer boroughs of the city.
UAA’s first clinic will open some time during the fourth quarter of 2009. On the last Sunday of each month, UAA's Spay/Neuter Clinics will be held near these "hot spots" where each clinic will sterilize 75 -100 dogs and cats.
UAA believes in sterilization as opposed to euthanization, the latter of which is the unfortunate reality of the animal over-population problem. According to UAA, an average of 110 cats and dogs per day are turned into New York City’s shelter system and approximately half of them will be killed due to there not being enough loving homes. “We feel the best way to combat the over-population problem is by providing high quality, convenient and low cost spay/neuter surgeries to people that cant afford them,” said UAA’s President, Jen Panton.
