A vegan bake sale organized by Liberation BC on Wednesday night raised over $8,300 to spay neuter and relocate UVic rabbits. 40 bakers contributed baked goods and hundreds of people came out in support of the fundraiser.
According to Gary Lowenthal, the founder of World Wide Vegan Bakesale, this bake sale broke a record of all vegan bake sale fundraisers. There have been thousands of vegan bake sale fundraisers around the world. The most recent one in Vancouver benefited the victims of the Chilean earthquake.
"We did not expect for a bake sale to bring in anywhere close to $8,300. However, the amount raised was indicative of the anger felt by the community about UVic's threat to mass slaughter the campus rabbits," says Joanne Chang, organizer of the event.
The majority of the attendees of the bake sale were not animal activists – but many have had some connection or interaction with the campus rabbits.
