In response to the OSPCA's decision to kill the animals at their Newmarket shelter due to a ringworm "epidemic," pet product retailer Pet Valu has revoked its sponsorship of the organization. In a statement released this afternoon, Pet Valu says they do not condone the OSPCA's actions:
"Pet Valu has always supported various rescues and organizations that act on behalf of animals to ensure a quality of life that otherwise would not be available to them. We were very saddened to hear about the mass euthanasia at the OSPCA, and although we don't know the exact specifics of why these animals have to be put down, we will be following this very closely.
However, effective immediately, Pet Valu has removed itself as a sponsor of the York Region OSPCA. While this is not immediately apparent on their website, we have directed them to remove our logo and name as soon as possible."
Facebook member Tommy Danger left this comment:
"I have a strong background in veterinary medicine and animal physiology; and I can assure you this outbreak is quite treatable. I have also volunteered extensively in shelters both in Ontario and the USA. It's ENTIRELY POSSIBLE to deal with this. It's a business decision they made to kill the animals. I support Pet Valu for their compassion."
Kudos to Pet Valu.

Kudos to Pet Valu for standing up to the OSPCA. They stand to gain far more in goodwill by doing this and they will be getting a lot more of my business. The word on this is going viral already.
Now, IAMS and PetHealth are the sponsors of the "Friends for Life" (funny, isn't that?) walkathon on May 16.
GREAT....KEEP YOUR ETHICS AND MORAL VALUES...and also advise other sponsors to do the same....It is time to shut down what has become the shame of Toronto, the shame of Ontario and another shame for Canada....and, Pet Valu please ASK QUESTIONS legally...
Right now I am currently looking up their locations, as they just got my sponsership! I am very impressed by their prompt respnse to this situation. YEA Pet Valu, this shows LEADERSHIP.
I applaud Pet Valu's decision to withdraw their sponsership; OSPCA's needless killing of these easily treatable, adoptable animals is heartsickening.
Pet Valu just got a new customer. I think it is wonderful to see a company like Pet Valu protest these killings by the Newmarket OSPCA. I hope this sends a strong message to the OSPCA.
Good on PetValu - the killing of all these animals because of RINGWORM (good grief - my kids have had ringworm!) is making the name of OSPCA despised all over the world!
Unfortunately the animals are the double victims in this--I understand Pet Value taking a stand to make a point for honest-to-God-- the poor animals!! Bill 50 is the culprit which makes the OSPCA not answerable to anyone--this creates victims which has been clearly demonstrated --this law is not democratic and creates tyrannical power and especially in a case with animals that have no voice and are totally defenseless--How could Bill 50 be passed is my next question !!??
It would seem that this "shelter" had already killed around a 100 animals when the noise level reached their ears! Frome then on there seems to have been some backtracking on the original figure quoted in reports of 350 to be killed because of these comparitively easily treatable infection known as "Athletes Foot" for its highly contagious cross infection route in humans when using communal showers in sports centres. Strangely there were no reports of plans to euthanize Olympians at the recent games should there have been an outbreak of this fungal infection! It would all appear to be about money and expediant a life lost for a tube of anti fungal cream!
Pet Valu has made a stand and has stood up for a principle That is very good It is refreshing that a company does that...
This is good news. Now we need to put pressure on IAMS and PetHealth to do likewise. The garbage needs to be cleaned out of the OSPCA -- and I'm talking about Kate MacDonald and Rob Godfrey.
all employees should be fired and replaced, seriously. We all know ring worm is treatable.Shady characters working there at ospca
OSPCA staff must have lost the brains that they were born with to make such an irrational decision to euthanize all the animals because of a treatable ringworm! They need to find compassion within their hearts & walk in these animals lives. The illogical reasoning to have these animals lives snuffed from them is a criminal act against innocent beings. They should all loose their position! OSPCA does not need cold blooded murderers looking after innocent voiceless animals. Kudos to Pet Valu for their wise decision!
This is great news. I hope others follow pet valu's decision!
Why didn`t Pet Valu pull their Sponsorship before now?
Who exactly do they think has been killing all the short haired healthy muscular mutts in Ontario since 2005?
