Toronto animal advocacy group Stop K9 Profiling is inviting everyone to a rocking night of music and fun at Toronto's legendary el Mocambo on Saturday, July 10, 2010.Featured performers will include West Memphis Suicide, Brother My Enemy, Miclordz and Sauce Funky, Colour of Each, and DJ Splattermonkey, along with some special guests and MCs.
"Bands Against BSL" will celebrate the release of illegally seized American Bulldog/Boxer-cross siblings Brittany and Rambo by Brampton Animal Services. And all funds raised will support the fight to save Ontario's dogs by putting an end to breed-specific legislation (BSL), also known as the constitutionally vague and fiscally irresponsible "pit bull" ban.
Cheri DiNovo, Toronto's MPP for Parkdale-High Park, who's introduced a private member's bill calling for the immediate removal of the breed-specific sections of the Dog Owners' Liability Act (DOLA) and the Animals for Research Act, will be attending the event.
What is a "pit bull"?
"Pit bull" is a slang term used to describe a number of different dogs, none of which are inherently dangerous or vicious.
But since the ban was enacted in 2005, animal control officers and police have been targeting innocent dogs, ripping them from their families, killing them, and labelling them "aggressive pit bulls" to justify their actions.
The "pit bull" ban has done nothing to "make our streets safer," as Ontario's former attorney general Michael Bryant claimed. Instead, it has demonized friendly, innocent dogs based on nothing but their looks, and criminalized caring, responsible dog owners.
The DOLA already contains dangerous-dog legislation that considers the actions of dogs and their owners on a case-by-case basis, and statistics have shown that banning and killing innocent dogs does not prevent dog bites and attacks.
But the media has created fear, paranoia, and ignorance by spreading misinformation about certain breeds, while trigger-happy cops are shooting non-aggressive, good-natured dogs who happen to escape from their yards.
Charging innocent owners with crimes they didn't commit, subjecting them to fines and jail time, and killing their canine companions must stop.
You can help make this happen on July 10. Money raised will fight for the rights of all Ontario dog owners and for the lives of their cherished canine companions.
