The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends that all dogs receive their "core vaccines"- rabies, canine distemper, canine parvovirus infection, and canine hepatitis are recommended for most pets. Distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza virus, and parvovirus are included in one vaccine, commonly known as DHLPPC.
Other "non-core vaccines" for dogs include canine kennel cough (bordatella) or a vaccine to prevent Giardia may also be recommended. The AVMA encourages everyone to discusss their pet's lifestyle, related disease risks, and the characteristics of available vaccines with your vet before deciding which "non-core" vaccines are best for your pet.
Most local rescue groups and animal shelters include the cost of the initial round of all of these vaccinations in your adoption fee, but policies vary, so be sure you ask.
And if you already have a pet, there are also several local rescue groups and shelters that provide low-cost vaccinations and are open to the public.
