Pets 101: Where can I find a free or low-cost spay/neuter program in North Texas?

Animal welfare advocates across the Metroplex constantly emphasize the importance of spaying and neutering pets to help control the pet overpopulation problem, and many offer free or low-cost spay/neuter programs to help you do just that.

  • The City of Dallas.  If you live inside the Dallas city limits, the City of Dallas has a free spay/neuter program for any residents on public assistance.
  • Metroplex Animal Coalition.  Available to Dallas residents making less than $35,000 per year who do not qualify for the City of Dallas program.
  • SPCA of Texas.  Clinics in Oak Cliff and McKinney offer low-cost spay/neuter and wellness services at reduced prices.
  • Kaufman County Animal Awareness Program.  The KCAAP clinic provides low-cost spay/neuter and wellness services to all Texas residents with grants often available for feral cats, large dogs, and multiple pets. Transportation is available from Wylie, Jacksonville, Tyler, Mineola, Corsicana, Waxahachie, Grand Prairie, Garland, Mesquite and Canton.
  • Texas Coalition for Animal Protection.  Low cost spay/neuter services are available to the general public by appointment at their clinics in Denton and Fort Worth. Low cost vaccinations are also available.
  • Kittico.  Spay/neuter services are available at their Dallas clinic for feral cats.  A donation is required but can be waived in certain circumstances.  All cats will be ear-tipped and any cat testing positive for Feline Leukemia will be humanely euthanized.

Many of these organization also offer low-cost vaccinations, micro chipping and wellness services so be sure to ask if you need those services.  You also need to call ahead and inquire about any additional charges such as in-heat or pregnancy termination charges or pain medications.

Please note that State law requires all animals to be vaccinated for rabies.  A rabies vaccination will be given to any animal not already vaccinated.  The rabies vaccination can run as high as $20 over and above the cost of any spay/neuter or wellness services.

Don't see a clinic near you?  Many city and county animal shelters offer small, limited time spay/neuter programs or can refer you to one so don't hesitate to call and ask.  A list of municipal shelters and other organizations can be found on the website of the Texas Animal Shelter Coalition.
