Bob Barker, former game show host and animal philanthropist, has donated $1 million to stop pigeon shoots in Pennsylvania.
The $1 million donation was given to SHARK, an Illinois based animal advocacy organization that has filmed pigeon shoots at the Philadelphia Gun Club in Bensalem, Bucks County.
Barker not only is donating money for Pennsylvania's pigeons but he has committed to join protestors at the infamous Gun Club in Bensalem during the planned demonstrations.
“The very characteristics of a live pigeon shoot are such that the event cannot be held without causing extensive animal suffering,” said Barker. “Live bird shoots are held under the guise of ‘sport’ target practice but they offer neither sport nor hunting.”
Pennsylvania is the only state to openly hold pigeon shoots. Legislation is pending in Pennsylvania that would ban shoots in which captive birds are tethered or launched in front of the shooter. The bills specifically say they cannot be used to restrict traditional hunting regulated by the Pennsylvania Game Commission.
A pro-hunting website called HuntingPA.com has some predictable comments to a post of the news about Bob Barker donating $1 million to stop Pennsylvania pigeon shoots.
Apparently the age old division among animal advocates and hunters is alive as evidenced by Dave T's comment: "The real issue isn't the 'saving' of the pigeon. It's the inroad of the animal rights activist into all area's of shooting\killing of animals. IE: Hunting. You see, the basic premise is that "animals" have rights. Yeah....and the next thing they will do is pay taxes and vote? Animals are property. Just like chairs, cars and the like. What are we gonna do next? Give ants rights too? Dave"
Many hunters deny that the living creatures they hunt and kill are sentient beings, preferring to consider them property "like chairs, cars and the like." If you destroy an inanimate object like a car or a chair that object does not feel pain or suffering. Pigeons do.
If you agree with Bob Barker that live pigeon shoots should be outlawed please contact your legislator and ask them to vote for these bills. Thanks for this great information! I am a big Bob Barker fan - and even more so now, it seems everyone is trying to turn a blind eye to this practice. They need to stop trying to push it away, just face the music and ban the cruelty.

Steve Hindi of SHARK is a very dedicated and hard-working animal activist and I'm very glad Bob Barker decided to help him in this campaign. He's a former hunter who got into animal advocacy precisely because of the pigeon shoots, which are a form of canned hunting and unspeakably cruel.

Well like I have said before, the only way Barker can get any press is to give away lots of moey. Now he has to give away his own cash and it is a great write off and coverage. Too bad he does not give it away to medical research, to ANY of the foundations for the ailing kids who used to visit The Price Is Right from the Make A Wish Foundation. Not give to the Make a Wish Foundation, but the some of the foundations of the ailments these kids have and the possible cures his money could help bring to life. Don't get me wrong, I love animals and the kind treatment of them, but I love kids too... they are going to run this world and save this planet, maybe Barker could do something to really make a change in this world, like being a better human being to start with. Any by the way Bob, thank you for the donation to the military boys, it is the first human thing you have done in your life... Try that course for a real change, walk that Golden Road you loved on the show and make it true!
What a bird brain. If you don't like it; don't DO it. I don't personally like it so I would never participate but I don't have the right to dictate to other people what THEY can/cannot do. I wonder what these animal rights people say about ABORTION!
No one can seem to defend the cruelty of these shoots, so all they do is simply try to redirect the issue. If the people of Pennsylvania would like the money to go to something else, why don't they call their legislators, and tell them to pass the bill that would finally end this in the last state that openly holds these shoots. Then you wouldn't have to worry about anyone else's money going to the cause, and could focus your energy elsewhere.
Everyone who finds this cruel needs to take personal responsibility for it and help take action. The cell phone bill did not pass itself. It passsed because constituents called. If you want to stop the pigeon shoot, you need to call your legislators again and again and get your friends and family too.
Rats with wings. Please, are you kidding?
