Petland Inc. needs to stop selling puppies!

PJF

A very troubling situation has arisen in America’s largest chain of puppy-selling pet stores—Petland Inc. is not only selling puppies, but they are enabling the propagation of puppy mills!

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) led an eight-month investigation revealing frightening results – Petland continues to maintain they only buy puppies from quality breeders, but in actuality they are selling puppy mill puppies to consumers all over the United States. Watch the video below by the Humane Society of the United States recapping their findings on how Petland stores are marketing puppy mill puppies to unsuspecting consumers all over the country.  Please be advised, the following video contains images that may be disturbing to viewers.

Thanks for this enlightening article! I hope that Petland will stop selling puppies soon and instead work with local shelters and rescue groups to help adopt out homeless animals in their communities. I won't be shopping at Petland or any other pet store that sells puppies!!! Also, The HSUS is working to organize another round of Petland demonstrations on March 14th. More info can be found on their website www.humanesociety.org/puppymills

Something I can't figure out - why is it not OK to sell the mill pups if you are a pet store but its great to sell the pups if you are a shelter.
Shelters typically have fewer rules on the care of the animals they take and they kill them if they get too many.
So tell me again how the breeders are bad and the pet store sold pups are bad but its OK if you get them from the shelter?

    Beth,

I think you raise an important question, but the main different between pups adopted from shelters versus breeders or pet stores is that the shelters save the pups from the puppy mills and then put them up for adoption, whereas the stores and breeders that are linked to puppy mills are keeping the puppy mills in business by selling puppies bred out of puppy mills. Additionally, shelters do not sell the dogs, they put them up for adoption, with a small adoption fee.

Also, I recognize my opinons are strong, but I never said breeders are bad, or even that pet stores are bad, but that the selling of puppies at pet stores are problematic. My main goal is to raise awareness regarding puppy mills -- because they raise puppies in horrific conditions, shoot the dogs that are not able to give birth anymore, and ignore dogs that are sick. I specifically highlighted Petland because of the 8 month investigation performed by the national Humane Society linking their puppies to puppy mills. The money Petland receives for the puppies they are selling are only enabling future purchasing of puppies from those puppy mills and keeping those puppy mills running and keeping the mistreatment of puppies at those puppy mills.

Also, it is an important to note the difference between kill versus no-kill shelters. As you mentioned, the care given to animals in shelters varies due to the amount of financial aid they receive, but shelters are all dedicated to finding permanent homes for animals even if their facilities and resources prevent them from doing so. It is not true that all shelters kill them if they get too many. There are two types of shelters: open-admission shelters or “kill shelters” and Limited Admission shelters or “No-kill” shelters. Open-admission shelters must accept any animal in need – which then may be forced to euthanize to make room for new animals. Limited Admission shelters will only accept animals within their capacity. The North Shore Animal League located on the north shore of Long Island in Port Washington is the world’s largest no-kill shelter. www.nsal.org

Overall, the Shelters rescue the puppies from the puppy mills, and then put them up for adoption, whereas the pet stores and breeders involved in the puppy mill circuit (which is not all pet stores or breeders by any stretch), keep the puppy mills in business by selling their puppies for prices ranging form 500-800. I hope this clarifies things for you and thank you for your comment.

Beth, I'm afraid that you didn't read Patricia's first article about "misconceptions about shelters". And furthermore, have you ever been to a shelter?

Thank you for the artice. Let's continue educating the public until the mass production of puppies and horrible misery in puppy mills are stopped for good. Meanwhile it is very upsetting to see some people couldn't even understand the difference between adopting a pet from animal shelter and buying a puppy-mill produced pup from a store. This leaves me speechless. Unbelivable...
