Ex-conVICK wants to right his wrongs

So the Humane Society of the United States is considering allowing Michael Vick to get involved in an anti-dog fighting outreach program now that he has been released from prison. Vick claims to be remorseful about the activities that led to his imprisonment.

Supporters of this program believe that Vick has served his sentence, apologized for his actions, and that he is ready to share his prison experience and the lesson he learned, with urban community youths who may otherwise travel down pathways to crime and inappropriate street activity.

What’s interesting is that the HSUS was the very first organization to petition the National Football League to indefinitely suspend Vick from the NFL and as well, they were the leading voice behind influencing all of Vick’s sponsors to dissolve their contracts with him. Both efforts were successful.

While numerous ex-convicts (or shall we say “ex-con’Vicks’”) serve their sentences, and then receive a clean slate - some deserving, some…not so much, one cannot ignore the most observable fact of all – Michael Vick has never shown any ‘genuine’ remorse for his actions – he just knows what to say, how to articulate it, to whom he should appeal, and exactly what avenue to travel, that will best pave his way back to the NFL.

One of the greatest occurrences as a result of Michael Vicks incarceration was the fact that his actions ‘unleashed’ the reality and magnitude of dog fighting in the United States. The charges he faced led to a nationwide interest in dog fighting illegalities, and spearheaded awareness and the strengthening of animal cruelty laws all across the nation.

Vick has often pleaded that since growing up with dog fighting as a part of life, he never stopped to consider that it was wrong, or that it was inhumane. Yet, once he became an adult, had gone off to school, had become an NFL football star, he still hadn’t reconsidered this pastime? This comment alone is disconcerting. To be a human being and to think that causing harm and death to other living beings is tolerable and ‘right’, and that it is a form of entertainment or a ‘sport’, is indefensible – and it was a choice that was made by a levelheaded, adult, able to make educated decisions, above peer influence. Placing this type of adult behavior on childhood innocence is outrageous!

Vick says he now wants to commit himself to leading a mission with the HSUS to exterminate the ‘sport’ of dog fighting, and earn his way back into the good graces of society…to be “part of the solution rather than a further part of the problem.”

What is certain is that while many of those opposed to granting Vick this medium believe his intentions are solely artificial and self-serving. Rightly so - look at this picture -- if one didn't know what actually happened to this pup after Vick held it for the "photo op", one would have been fooled into believing she was actually being held by a compassionate man.

I'm not sure I understand what exactly you think Michael Vick should do now? He's been to prison, lost his job along with millions of dollars both real and potential. He is working with the very organization that was his loudest detractor to let other know about the serious tradgedy that goes along with dog fighting. All this and still some say things like
"Michael Vick has never shown any ‘genuine’ remorse for his actions – he just knows what to say, how to articulate it, to whom he should ap

I understand that the point you're making is that vick isn't being genuine. But, come on now...If he does what's expected, it's not good enough. If he doesn't do what's expected,...it's even worse.

I would say it is highly humane and honorable for Vick to go back to HSUS to try to make things right.

It truly amamzes me how people can be so unforgiven when it is totally convenient for them. The man made a terrible mistake "Got IT". Why do we have a penial system if we are still going to persacute an individual once he or she has paid their debt to society. I'ts not right. Get over it and allow the man to move on with his life. Everyone as a cause that is near and dear to their heart, that strikes a personal cord and that affects them a little bit more than the next person. I am a dog owner m

Bravo for such a well-written piece on Vick. We cannot ever trust this man around animals, or to a great extent, any other living beings.
Michael Vick will say what the media wants to hear without having any real convictions (no pun intended) or remorse about his henious crime.

Vick is an animal abuser. Vick is an actor. And clearly, under the right legal counsel, Vick is a politician -- says what he is told to say, and acts how he is told to act -- so that people like you VickFan, OutofTexas, Will, will believe he has repented for his sins and is worthy of foregiveness. Get into the real friggin world people!! If this were you or I, after a FELONY charge, we WOULD NOT be getting our jobs back!! Why, becuz he is worth so much on the football field, we should grant him

I totally agree with you about that scumbag. I do not think he has ever shown remorse and I don't think he will. For the HSUS to involve him is just wrong. We are talking about someone who had no qualms about fighting, killing and torturing living beings! Someone who just stood by and watched and participated! Allowing him anything is only condoning his actions. I am sick of the gangster mentality of todays youth and allow him a say in anything is just saying that these kids can do whatever they

Vick Fan, outoftexas: Duh...Those of us who love animals & NEVER abused, or even neglected animals think he should get the same treatment he doled out to them. How hard is that to figure out? You must think that people who have never needed it pointed out to them that torturing & fighting animals is wrong, are dumb & can't read behavior & attitude, and when access to statics is as close as your pc. To be blunt, since that seems to be necessary here, we think he should go die somewhere, preferabl
