It was an evening full of anticipation--waiting to see which two contestants would be going home, and waiting to see what kind of performance Adam Lambert would give during his return to the American Idol stage.
Would the judges' save last week end in vain for "Big Mike" Lynche, the one remaining Idol hopeful from Florida? Or would he survive to continue on into the Top 7?
My gut feeling was that it would not be Mike going home this week, but either Andrew Garcia or Aaron Kelly. Well, I got one out of two correct.
After teasing us by putting Big Mike, Tim Urban and Katie Stevens in one group of potential contestants poised to leave, and Andrew Garcia, Aaron Kelly and Casey James in the other group,Katie Stevens and Andrew Garcia ended up going home last night.
I expected Andrew to go home, but was a bit surprised about Katie. She's a very talented young lady, and though I don't think she has made the right song choices or defined her genre yet, I still think she outperformed Aaron Kelly on an ongoing basis. Could it be there are young gals going gaga for Aaron a la Sanjaya? Perhaps that's why he's making it this far--he has the voice, but is such a young and sweet sixteen, I think he needs a bit more experience to reach American Idol status.
Ultimately I breathed a sigh of relief to see that Big Mike will be coming back for another week, as he's in my Top Two along with Crystal Bowersox. He gave a flawless performance Tuesday night, as did Crystal.
Now on to Adam's performance of his latest single, "Whataya Want From Me"--and what a performance it was, to semi-quote Ryan.
Adam brought new life to the show for the few minutes that he was back on the Idol stage, following a very vanilla duet by Brooke White and Justin Gaston. I personally could have happily lived without watching that duo--absolutely nothing memorable there.
Though I'm a Glambert myself, I wasn't too excited personally about the song itself, since not only is it one of my least favorites from his album, but I've watched other performances Adam's given on various shows like Good Morning America, Jay Leno, etc over the last few months and they haven't been all that enthralling--just average. I can imagine Adam himself must be incredibly tired of singing the song non-stop, though you would never know it based on his dynamic performance last night.
He started off in true Lambert bigger-than-life style, a silhouette surrounded by sexy, smoky green light...and instead of moving right into the song's standard upbeat pace, he brought it on slowly, teasing us with an acapella intro for the first minute and a half. I wondered briefly if he would continue the entire song along that vein, but I hoped he was building momentum--and he didn't disappoint. He erupted out of the gates with flashing laser lights and the eclectic energy we've come to expect from the superstar--definitely bringing it for our entertainment.
What amazed me the most is Adam took his own song and made it even more original, offering us a new version that was as captivating as when he surprised us week after week on Season 8. His vocals sounded outstanding, depsite the fact that he's been touring for some time now. He even gave us a taste of his signature wail at the end of the song. The audience went wild for him both during the song and after.
Good to have you back, Adam. American Idol just hasn't been the same without you.
If you missed Adam's performance, you can watch it below.
Do you think America made the right choices last night by voting off Katie and Andrew? What did you think of Adam's performance? I'd love to hear what you thought.
Tune in next Tuesday night at 8pm EST on Fox to see how the Top 7 perform.

I'm a huge Adam Lambert fan and I thought his performance was amazing! He's the most talented entertainer today. I've watched last night's performance about a dozen times and it just gets better and better. Way to go Adam!
I dearly loved Adams performance as I am definately a super fan of Adams....Ryan was really bellowing out the numbers on the watching of the show, but Adam made it....happen.....
No, I do not think that Katie should of went home...Mike should of gone home last week...thanks to Ellen and Kara he didnt...he seems arrogarent...... Can't wait to see Adam in concert in June....
Adam is an outstanding at song adaptation and performance staging and is absolutely a magnificent singer. He raised the bar on American Idol and no one has ever reached it yet. His North American tour. The Glam Nation" -when he returns from the UK-will start in June, and Orianthi will open On the radio, said he wants it to have atmosphere, feel like your somewhere else, transport people, mystery, mood, sexy, celebration.Let's go.
Can Adam get any better ? This guy is just sooo unpredictable and mesmerizing. I was completely glued to my TV during his performance. He gave me goose bumps. More! more ! more ! from this dynamite of a performer.Waiting patiently for his tour.
KATIE SHOULD BE IN THE FINAL 7 ABSOLUTELY, MUCH STRONGER THAN AARON OR TIM. BAD SONG CHOICES, BUT WE HAVEN'T SEEN THE LAST OF KATIE.
Melanie: You were spot on about Adam's genie-like ability to reinterpret his music. Pure genius - taking that song (it is personally one of my favorites) and changing it up. Add that to the growing repetoire: Off the album, acoustic, and now this! He never disappoints! Plus I am so pleased he got to mentor; I think it gained him a new legion of fans who got to see that aspect of his personality. Go Adam!
I agree with your article--Adam brought huge life back to a very boring season. I loved his performance-superb! I think he showed the contestants that you can even change-up your own big hit and still keep it equally incredible. All the contestants can take away a million lessons from Adam's one performance last night! I did expect Andrew or Aaron to go last night but not Katie. After Andrew was eliminated, had no idea who the other would be... Thought the judges were way off the mark the night before... They are so hot on Crystal--she has a great voice but boring and so 'wanna be Joplin'. I think Adam is THE BEST they have EVER had on the show---including Kelly and Carrie-and they won!
Adam is both magical and a magician... he is enthralling!
Where do i get more information about Adam's next tour? I went to Indio to see him and he has developed an even better stage presence since then... I need more Adam info--i've gotten all my friends to love him (almost) as much as me! He is the hottest thing going right now! We all want to go to see him again!
Adam never ceases to amaze me. What a great showman! Breathtaking, electrifying, incredible!
I thought Adam's performance was spectacular. As always he makes it interesting and very exciting. He is an outstanding performer as well as a kind and generous human being as evidenced in his mentoring. Can't wait for the Glam Nation tour.Love this guy!!!
More of Adam Lambert please... I miss him already...
adam was fabulous on idol last nite. idol will never be the same since adam. he's a genius at staging and his voice is truly magnificent. people like him only come along once in a great while. i was looking forward to seeing him perform, not what was going on with the other idol contestants. i've missed his performing every tuesday nite. this years idols may have pretty good voices, but they are a boring lot. no one moves and makes you feel excited. they just stand up there and sing. and i think tim urban should have been gone long ago. katie is a much better singer. i think there are too may teeny boppers out there voting for the younger men just because they are cute, not because they are talented. idol should rethink their voting system and make it a fair competition.
I thought the right ones were voted off. As always loved Adam. I think this year has been so boring for the most part...very serious performances. Adam was very refreshing. But, as always I'll tune in just in case something great happens. It's hard to top season 8.
