Adam Lambert rocks the Bank Atlantic Center-- along with Kris What's-His-Name

Courtesy of poptower.com
I'm 40 years old and a Glambert. I admit it.
What can I say, American Idol is a guilty pleasure and has been for a few years now. My husband and I both love the show, and are fans of Chris Daughtry, David Cook and now--Adam Lambert.
So it was a perfect foray back to the land of the living for me to attend the American Idol show at the Bank Atlantic Center this past week. Being that I had a baby 3 weeks ago, it was my first night out on my own and what a night it was...
Now don't get me wrong--I think all of the singers this year were really talented in their own ways...but no one can come close to Adam Lambert as far as his voice--or his performance.
I'll start by saying I wasn't a huge fan of Megan Joy or Anoop Desai on the show...but they both sounded excellent live. Whatever coaching these kids have had has really paid off, because they've improved tremendously since their performances on the show.
Lil Rounds looked fantastic, and did a terrific performance of Beyonce's "Single Ladies".
I even enjoyed Scott Macintyre, who I thought was quite bland on the show. But his energy level was excellent and he sounded terrific. Although...I have to say that for me, the show felt like it began once Matt Giraud came out. He was better than ever once he came out singing the Fray's "You Found Me" and his signature song, "Georgia". His piano playing was incredible, and he really engaged the audience like a pro.
Danny Gokey--who was an early favorite of mine--also stood out during the show. You just can't help feeling the warm fuzzies when he talks to the crowd--he makes you feel like he's speaking just to you--and I enjoyed his songs. Even his dancing was much better (Paula, have you been coaching Danny on that?)
Allison Iraheta was one of the only Idols that I felt was a bit unpolished, for some reason. She had her hair in her face for most of her songs, and her movements were choppy and amateur. Don't get me wrong, she certainly has a helluva set of pipes--but her best moment was her duet with Adam for "Slow Ride"--although to be honest, I wasn't listening much to her at that point (sorry Allison!)...
Because as good as the other singers were...the arena virtually exploded once Adam Lambert stepped onstage. He opened with Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" and the crowd went wild.  The applause and screams were absolutely deafening once he finished the song...and none of the other performers elicited this kind of response--not even Kris--um-what's his name? Oh right, ALLEN.
And of course...Adam's shining moment--and the obvious audience favorite--was "Mad World". I loved the song back in the 80's when Tears for Fears sang it, but Adam's version is so chillingly haunting, and just brings tears to my eyes each time I hear him sing it. To listen to it live was such a privilege, truly.
Lambert gyrated his hips a la Elvis during a rendition of David Bowie's "Fame", and it was clear that the young girls in the audience didn't give a hoot about his sexual orientation (even a teenage girl next to me said it best--"he's gay, but he's hot". I have to agree.
Smokin' hot, as far as I'm concerned--when it comes to the vocal range he has, the showmanship and the stage presence. And okay...he's easy on the eyes too. He's most definitely the complete package, and I can't wait to hear the album he releases in the fall.
And to be honest, the energy level dropped a few octaves once Adam left the stage, and Kris came on.  A pity, really, because Kris is talented--he can play several instruments, and he can carry a tune. But he simply can't compare to the mega-star prowess of Mr. Lambert. (Many people even left the arena after Adam was finished with his set.)
We saw it happen with Chris Daughtry (Taylor who?) and I believe we'll see it happen again with Adam, and even more so. It doesn't matter that he didn't win the Idol title--his talent will take him beyond boundaries...and I'm just thrilled I was there to see him--and more importantly hear him--at the start of his magical journey.

Loved your review. Like you, I think Adam sizzles, and I love it when someone gives him the praise he deserves. I'm 67. You never get too old for his magic!!

I was there as well and you are right, Adam was the show. He brought everyone to their feet. History is being made. You were kind enough to not mention how Kris was booed as he was last night as well. It is because most people believe Adam should have won.

I am 86 and I went to Sunrise with my daughter. I love the way Adam moves and sings. I told my daughter that when Adam has his own tour I do not want anything but the first few rows center so I can see and hear every detail.

Ditto to the comment "Loved your review!" I totally agree with everything you said. I am old enough to be his mother and am very proud of this young man, his talent, charisma and the appreciation he has expressed for being given this opportunity to share himself so brillantly with the rest of the world. Thank you again for giving him the full support he truly deserves!

  • James 2 years ago

wtpd, What do you mean the title is cruel? A lot of folks think that it was cruel that Adam did not win because an inferior talent had a home state that voted for the win out of state pride. It was cruel when Adam had to stand on the sideline listening to someone butcher the victory song.

I agree with everything you said too. I know in your review, you said a few slightly not very nice things about a few of the contestants. You know what? even though deep down, a lot of people felt that way too but yet they object it so strongly and complain how you could say such things. Simon Cowell is a classic example - so many people think he's so mean, the things he said, but why then during the voting, people still agree with him!?
I mentioned something about that it's a shame that Adam is gay. I got attacked straight away about that comment. But lets face it, a lot of people, even maybe that person who replied my comment felt the same thing but just didn't want to admit (how else people would go and buy these magazines and read about the gossips)! I love Adam and yes I watched the AI last season because of him; but I was only telling the truth of what I feel about gay issue which again I'm sure a lot of people agree (though they didn't want to show it).

Your review is spot on and your title says it all. Adam is stealing the show and they should put him last. It doesn't give Kris a chance. I know so many people who know who Adam is but know idea who Kris is (non-idol watchers). The gay comment could have been left out. If a person is hot they are hot. No need to qualify. Thanks for the great article.

I'm so excited to be going to the Adam Lambert concert in August! I was trying to downplay the fact that Adam is so way over the top better, but then you had to go and remind me of that horrible results night! Did anyone happen to notice how Adam made sure the audience could see Kris while that buffoon was lying about "how America voted"? Adam is pure class!

I am 55, alive, and will NOT be deprived of the young and sexy Adam Lambert !! He outshines all of the other Idols beyond dispute...just read all of the Google articles and reviews and fan reviews (such as this one)....even those who were not fans previously are slowly awakening to the wonder that is Adam. Of course, although I can only live vicariously thru youtube and will not be seeing the Idols Live performance, I still have the memories of American Idol !!!
I believe, as someone else here stated, that we are seeing history being made. I have never, in all my life, been so impressed by a performer as I am with Mr. Lambert.

That said....I truly hope that it is NOT true that Kris Allen is being disrespected when he follows Adam on stage. He is sweet and harmless , and he has does have talent!! Adam would be very hurt to know that his fans were disrespecting his good friend.

It is like your Mom teaches you...if you do not have anything nice to say, then SHUT UP !!

Think you were right on. Except, as others have mentioned, please lose the sexual references. Adam just exudes extreme sex out of his black fingernails, period, end of story!! I was at the Dallas concert and was impressed with Matt's performing skills. He was fun to watch, and in retrospect, he should have finished higher. Adam was amazing, and I didn't see any fans leave. We also enjoyed Kris, and I was surprised by the strengh and richness of his voice. That didn't come over on TV. Good job on the review and congrats on your baby!!!

Melanie, you say you're a fan of Adam Lambert, but you couldn't resist being disrespectful of his wishes to disregard his personal orientation -- the one quotable statement you heard all night was "he's gay, but..."? You were disrespectful of Kris on a personal level as well with your title. Don't you have your approach a little backward? Critique the performers professionally, be respectful of them personally.

There's no problem. Kris is Adam's cool down period. That way everyone can enjoy the finale. He doesn't care, because he knows he a different artist. There will be people that will prefer his softer tones when the albums come out. They are a nice difference, and they'll make a fortune. Plus, both of them are the hottest male idols we have ever had. Both of them are gorgeous.

Just like the rest of the baby boomers here, I am an ADAM fanatic from day 1. Am I glad I saw his audition and so happy that I watched history emerging on AI without miss which I did only for him. I'm really alive and inspired just like Connie here who is 86, all because of ADAM who electrifies and excites us all with his passion and intensity, sexiness and gorgeousness. We're the screaming generation of fans who also love with passion and intensity. ADAM is a gift from GOD that comes once or twice in a lifetime. The last one was ELVIS. ADAM is a legend in the making.

You're absolutely right and make statements based on what you saw, heard and experienced. Adam is totally a megastar and his popularity cannot be stop. He's truly a complete package from his talent, to his looks, charisma, attitude. Every time he performs, I don't notice anything else coz my eyes are focus on him.My eyes follow wherever he goes on the stage.

I too am old enough to be Adam's mother, but I agree with everything said here. Do lose the gay comment and this article would have been perfect. I agree that we are all witnessing the birth of a superstar in Adam. Kris, I have already forgotten. He totally mumbles his way through interviews with no real insight into how the music business works and I feel sorry for Kris, but hey, I am sure I would have been one of the first to the exit door when Adam finished simply because I would be just stunned and amazed and wanting to savor that as I drove home. Thanks for the review.

    @ Sue
Don't be defensive. Kris is no different. He is not unique . He is the same as the common, ordinary singer that you heard in amateurs. Kris is a nice person and his family are friendly. But as far as talent, charisma & stage performance (as many say, a complete package) are concern, he cannot be compared to the "thunder" Adam. Despite the effort of Arkansas, the mediocre winner cannot upstage the runner-up. It is Adam who's leading the tour and will be forever the "FRONTRUNNER".

It's the ADAM LAMBERT Concert just like it was the ADAM LAMBERT Show during AI. ADAM is unstoppable. I'm very happy for him. I wish him all the success and happiness.
I agree with the blogger who said Matt should have a higher spot on AI. Matt is a very talented artist and musician more than Kris. He was so underrated during AI all because the judges has already appointed Danny who is so overrated to be in the finals with ADAM. Matt's misfortune was singing that Cold Play's song during the 36 to get the 12 which paved the way for Kris being included both being in Group 2 and Matt landed in the Wild Card. Being so was a heavy burden for Matt to always prove himself with more effort. But during Hollywood Week and the 36, he was one of the front runners with the impact of playing Georgia, if anyone would care to go back. It's why Kara was his number 1 fan. And I myself would pick Matt over Kris and Danny anytime. If not for ADAM's shining star which overshadowed all, Matt had a chance.

Thanks everyone for the comments! I'm glad you enjoyed my review and I love the feedback. Just to make note about the gay comment--it was meant to be a positive reflection--that some people don't care about his sexual orientation (and it was a comment I overheard, not a personal opinion). My personal opinion? It doesn't matter to me about that in the least! It has nothing to do with Adam's talent and I salute that he had the courage to speak out about that in his honesty. So I didn't mean to offend anyone by mentioning what the girl next to me said--it was merely to point out that Adam has mass appeal no matter what! (and the only reason I would think it's a shame that he's gay, is because he wouldn't be interested in a gal like me...but shhhhh...don't tell my husband about my school-girl crush! Especially at my age...lol...)

    Keep the feedback coming, folks!

Very exact review. It was like you said when Matt Giraud got up on stage the concert started. He played that piano extremely well which I thought was funny because others have taken lessons and this kid is self taught. Another thing was Matt Giraud is really coming into his own and his singing is improving. I believe it is confidence that is changing him. But, Holy cow! When Adam Lambert's video started on screen people went crazy. When Adam showed up it was mayhem! I was worried about a riot! He really got people pumped up and the energy change was so amazing! There is just something about him that drives you nuts. And OMG the was he dressed and danced and sang! Adam Lambert is...well dude...he is hot! He could sell stamps. I mean everything he wears I want to buy. His hair was hot. If he buffed up like David Bromstad he would put all of hollywood up and coming men to shame. Smoking!

Right now I am listening to Kings of Leon, "Sex on Fire" because Adam, in an interview, said that he would like this to be his theme song to be played every time he walked into a room. He's right - it's PERFECT!

Great article, Melanie. And, geez people, lighten up - don't you understand that Adam is breaking down barriers? He doesn't want to be the poster child for gay rights but, before this, many people had a fixed notion in their heads about what a gay man was all about.

He's opening eyes - so that all can see that a gay man is a person. In Adam's case a very sexy, gorgeous, hunk of a person with the voice of an angel.

"He's gay, but he's hot" is okay, it's step towards acceptance.

I can't understand why people find it so weird for straight females to be attracted to gay men. I am a fan of Jrock (Japanese rock), and within the Jrock subculture, pretty boys with make up doing fanservice is quite common. Girls absolutely love it when these guys kiss each other on stage, lick their instruments, etc. I got really surprised when people were talking about Adam losing support from female fans because of his sexuality. I guess this kind of thing is just new for North America...

I find them sexy!!!The best thing is you don't ever have the pressure of sleeping with them!! And Adam is just hot!!!!hot!!! It's funny reading his facebook fan page. The only thing ever written about adam is hot!!!How freaking hot!!sexy!!talented and hot!! He is beautiful!!! He has that androgynous sex appeal. Weird, because I have it as well. Guys, listen to me. This is serious.

You see, my girlfriend is OBSESSED with Adam Lambert and she practically knelt down in front of me just so I could come with her to Atlanta to watch the show. She didn't want to go alone and I didn't want to hurt her so I agreed.

And it's insane. When I say something bad about Adam, she just gets mad at me! When I kept teasing her for crushing on a gay man we almost broke up because she was so mad. I'm serious.

So anyway we went to the Gwinett arena and at the start I just don't understand why everyone is cheering for this Lambert guy. I mean yea, he's good looking, but isn't he gay?

Until I realized it didn't even matter. Because after the concert I think I just turned into my girlfriend practically being obsessed with the man. And i'm a guy for crying out loud! I mean, holy eff he was amazing! His voice is amazing and those dance moves just left me speechless.

    Wow.

So that is my story. Sorry if too long LOL.

I went to the Atlanta (Duluth) show and ADAM was EXCELLENT! KRIS ALLEN WAS EXCELLENT! The arena crowd @ each concert is just as important as the entertainers themselves! Atlanta gave each performer a great reception & they gave us an Excellent Show! Kris & his show is totally different from Adam's, did a few people leave yes, but it was a SOLD OUT concert & the arena holds around 13,000 so if a couple hundred left to go get in line @ the barricades or drive 3 hours back home so what there was no thousands leaving. Video tells the story the arena was still packed when they song 'Dont Stop Believing' KRIS ALLEN was AWESOME! I say this when I bought tickets to see Adam only, so imagine how happy I was when I actually enjoyed the entire show! I actually listen to Kris & Matt Giraud again on Youtube (i always listen to Adam). People say Kris is ordinary, yeah, he is and that's why we will hear him on every TOP 40 radio station come this Fall.
